If you’re looking for a hotel in Torsåker, you can plan your stay around the subjects that interest you: church and local history, mining and geology, or outdoor activities. The destinations and activities vary considerably—from historic buildings and a signposted route to a ski link whose grooming depends on snow conditions.

Church and local history

Today’s three-aisled Torsåker Church was built between 1754 and 1758. It stands on the site of an earlier building from the 12th century, so the history of the site goes back further than the present church building. The church contains an altarpiece made by Mårten Jönsson, as well as a pulpit also made by him. The building’s history and interior furnishings offer different points of interest for anyone interested in the development of the church building or historic craftsmanship.

Gammelgården is a miner’s farm dating from the early 19th century. The building now known as Gammelgården was moved from the Hagas farm in the village of Stenshyttan to Fors by in the 1920s. Every year, the Torsåker local heritage association hosts a traditional Midsummer celebration there and offers tours in summer. If you’re planning a tour, check current visiting arrangements beforehand.

Pelargoniums and mining history

The Pelargon Museum & Garden displays more than 200 varieties of pelargonium. It also has two greenhouses measuring 160 and 130 square metres, respectively, and a café. The collection, the greenhouses of different sizes, and the café each offer a different focus for a visit to this destination.

Mining is another theme to explore. Stollgången is a 265-metre-long mine passage that leads directly into Storberget. Guided tours through the passage to underground mine chambers are available; check dates and availability before making specific plans. There is a walking area around “Stollen,” the colloquial name for the mine passage. A signposted nature trail also leads from Stollgången to Tjärnäs hytta, a distance of about two kilometres. The two distances refer to different sections: 265 metres for the mine passage and about two kilometres for the nature trail.

At Valls limestone quarry, the bedrock in Torsåker contains both iron ore and limestone. The limestone bands are generally long, narrow and winding; complex folds in the rock shaped them. This adds the area’s geology as a subject in its own right, alongside the history of its mines.

Outdoor activities and nature

In central Torsåker, there is a disc golf course with a nine-hole round that can be played for free. Discs can be borrowed from the parish office by calling 0290-400 02. The Torsåker exercise trails start above Torsåker IP on Kägelvägen; the five-kilometre route leads up Lindforsberget.

When there is enough snow, a link from the five-kilometre loop of the Torsåker ski trail to Pålsboängarna is groomed under the direction of Torsåkers IF. This option depends on snow conditions and grooming. When planning, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the outdoor routes described and the seasonal skiing option.

South of Torsåker lies Kårsberget, a 66-hectare natural forest area. A short hiking trail crosses rocky outcrops to a viewpoint. Malmjärn is a shallow bathing spot four kilometres southeast of Torsåker. The two destinations appeal to different interests: Kårsberget centres on natural forest and a viewpoint, while Malmjärn offers a bathing spot. You can choose what to include in your stay depending on whether you’re more interested in history, geology or outdoor activities.
