Norrsundet: Industrial History and a Coastal Town
Norrsundet is a coastal industrial settlement that grew up around a sawmill and a sulphate factory around the turn of the 20th century. This heritage provides the area’s historical context. Alongside its industrial history, the landscape is shaped by a small-scale fishing settlement by the water, historical museums and a coastal walking trail. When planning your trip, you can choose between local history and scenery as distinct points of interest.
Museums and Historical Buildings
The Norrsundets arbetarmuseum is housed in Ådala’s old school, built in 1897. Its exhibitions offer insights into life in the 1910s, 1920s and 1950s. The themes range from the early decades of the 20th century to the 1950s, offering several distinct perspectives on local life from different periods. Ådala bruksmuseum is open year-round every Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Check these opening hours before you arrive.
Kastellet is Norrsundet’s oldest surviving building and is now a small industrial museum. It originally served as an engine house and was converted around the turn of the 20th century. The buildings at Kastellet are distinctive and of cultural and historical value. This brings together two perspectives: the former function of the individual building and the cultural and historical significance of the buildings at Kastellet.
In the heart of Norrsundet is Kulturhuset Fyren, a cultural centre offering a wide range of activities. Bergmans Fisk sells fresh, frozen and processed fish. So, as well as historical and cultural sites, local fish products are also among the destination’s attractions.
Fishing Settlement and Coastal Trails
Saltharsfjärden is a small-scale fishing settlement with boathouses and fishing huts right by the water. The picturesque fishing village is within easy walking distance of Norrsundet’s centre; the Saltharsfjärdens havsbad sea bath is also nearby. To tell the two places apart, Saltharsfjärden is the fishing settlement, while Saltharsfjärdens havsbad is the nearby sea bath.
The walking trail on Skatudden passes the rock slabs at Slätvik and leads to views of Lillgrund and the open sea. Unlike Saltharsfjärden, where boathouses and fishing huts define the settlement, Skatudden is all about the trail and its views. This clearly distinguishes a coastal settlement with historic buildings from a walking trail with rock slabs and sea views.
Natural Areas Southeast of the Town
The Marsjön-Bondsundet nature reserve lies six kilometres southeast of Norrsundet. It encompasses aquatic habitats, valuable wetlands and natural forests with a high proportion of broadleaf trees. While Skatudden’s walking trail is characterised by rock slabs and views, the nature reserve focuses on its diverse habitats. The two natural attractions thus offer different experiences: one is a trail with named viewpoints, while the other is an area of aquatic, wetland and forest habitats.
