Hamrånge: Cultural Heritage and Coastal Landscapes
In Hamrångebygden, open cultural landscapes meet forests, lakes, and an archipelago landscape. The area lies along the Jungfrukusten between Gävle and Söderhamn and can be reached from the E4 via an exit at Hagsta or Axmartavlan. A trip to Hamrånge offers several ways to explore the area: cultural history, trails through varied landscapes, and paddling routes near Axmar bruk. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide which of these themes matters most to you during your stay.
Buildings and Cultural Heritage
Hamrånge Church was built between 1847 and 1851 using stones from the medieval church. The reused material connects the 19th-century church building with its medieval predecessor. The kastale was built in the 12th century as a defensive structure. These sites therefore represent different aspects of cultural history: the church reflects its construction period and older building materials, while the kastale served a defensive purpose.
At Axmar bruk, the designed landscape is another highlight: since 2011, Axmar bruk has been Gävleborg’s only cultural reserve. The English Park at Axmar bruk dates from the 1860s. Walking trails pass through an English-inspired park and the forest, and along the boat harbor. In chronological order, the sites span a long period: from the 12th-century kastale to the church built between 1847 and 1851, and then to the English Park of the 1860s. Their themes include a defensive function, reused church materials, and park design.
Comparing Hiking Trails
Trail length and theme are two different criteria that can help you choose a route. The marked Kristinastigen is an approximately 5 km section of the Helgonleden and passes through agricultural and forest landscapes with several archaeological remains. The 4 km Stora bruksrundan loops around the Axmar bruk cultural reserve and follows the Stig till vrak trail. Kyrkstigen is a 9.3 km forest trail that Axmar residents used to take on their way to church. In terms of length, Kyrkstigen is more than twice as long as Stora bruksrundan. The trails also offer different experiences: archaeological remains, historic journeys to church, or a loop near Axmar bruk. At approximately 5 km, Kristinastigen falls between the 4 km Stora bruksrundan and the 9.3 km Kyrkstigen.
Paddling Routes near Axmar bruk
For a different way to experience the landscape, Axmar bruk has three paddling routes through an almost untouched archipelago landscape: Inomskärsturen, Kusö Kalvturen, and Kusön övernattningstur. Alongside the named walking routes, these offer a water-based activity in a distinctive landscape. If you decide what kind of activity you want to do first when planning your trip, you can clearly distinguish this option from a walk or hike.
