Almàssera brings together local history, the Huerta and local cuisine. The Museu de l'Horta, the parish church of Santísimo Sacramento and the chufa fields offer different ways to explore the area. Everyday culture, architectural history, landscape, religious tradition and regional dishes each provide a distinct point of connection.

Museums and Everyday Culture

The Museu de l'Horta is located in the town’s former slaughterhouse, in the heart of the Huerta. Its permanent exhibition explores aspects of traditional village culture and is divided into two parts. The first displays objects from domestic life, with a particular focus on chufa cultivation. In this way, the museum connects everyday culture with an agricultural topic that also features in Almàssera’s chufa fields.

Another way to learn about local history is to visit Casa Natal Lladró. The birthplace of the Lladró brothers has been converted into a museum. Educational workshops are offered there to explain the porcelain-making process. If you would like to include a workshop in your travel plans, check its availability before your visit.

Architecture and History

The parish church of Santísimo Sacramento dates from the 18th century. Its brick façade and two towers define its exterior architecture, while three naves divide the interior. The central nave has a barrel vault, and the complex also includes a transept. These features offer different ways to appreciate the building, from the design of its façade to the layout of the church interior.

The Cruz de término of Almàssera provides an older historical reference: the wayside cross dates from the 14th century. The church and the cross thus mark two distinct historical points of reference in the town.

Corpus Tradition

The Corpus tradition is also part of the area’s cultural identity. A papal concession permits the celebration to take place on a different date, because “el miracle dels peixets” is traditionally performed. During the traditional Corpus procession, dolçaina music and traditional dances accompany the procession. The combination of the concession, the performance and the procession brings this custom to life as a religious and cultural tradition.

Huerta and Landscape

Clot de la Caldera is a natural site in the Barranco de Carraixet. Chufa is grown in Almàssera’s fields and used to make horchata. In this way, the Huerta landscape is linked to an agricultural product.

The Vía Verde Xurra runs for around 16 km through the Huerta of València. The route is accessible on foot, by bicycle, on roller skates and in a wheelchair.

Local Cuisine and Finding a Hotel

The local cuisine also offers a concrete point of connection. Almàssera paella is made with bull liver, and arròs al forn is considered a particularly important rice dish in the local cuisine. Together with horchata, these dishes offer a culinary link from chufa cultivation to rice dishes.
