Discover La Mata De Morella
Accommodation in La Mata De Morella
La Mata de Morella lies at an altitude of over 820 meters, surrounded by the Cantavieja and La Cuba rivers. The historic center brings together traces of everyday life in the past and striking buildings; beyond the village, the river landscape and hiking trails offer further reasons to explore the area. Seasonal experiences and festivals are also worth considering when choosing when to travel.
Historic Buildings and Craftsmanship
La Nevera is in the historic center. The building was constructed in the early 17th century and remodeled in the 18th century. Snow collected in its large shaft: thick layers of snow alternated with layers of straw to maintain the temperature. Following a careful restoration, La Nevera now houses an ethnological museum about the Espardenya. If you are planning a visit, check the access arrangements in advance.
The former uses of other buildings also tell the story of community life. El Horno y el Mercado de la Lana first served as a wool market and later as a communal bakery. The former oven is still a meeting place; the MesĂłn del Forn restaurant is located there. Before planning a visit, check whether the restaurant is currently operating.
The Palacio del Ayuntamiento is an example of 16th-century Aragonese civil architecture. An inscription bears the date 1564; the former prison is in the basement. The Casa Palacio de los Pedro y La Figuera is a palatial mansion dating from the late 16th or early 17th century. Its ashlar façade is topped by a small wooden eave and an arcade gallery, typical of Aragonese civil architecture. La Mata was under the jurisdiction of Morella and belonged to the Pedro and La Figuera families.
The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora de las Nieves combines elements from different periods: the apse, sacristy, two side chapels, triumphal arch, and bell tower date from the late 16th century; newer sections were built from 1862 onward. Other religious buildings include the 17th-century Ermitas de Santa Barbara, which form an architectural ensemble with an adjoining two-story building, and the Ermita de San Gil, built in 1786. It was restored and returned to use for religious services.
The narrow, historic streets are also part of the village's cultural heritage. Two Gothic peirons date back to the 14th century; replicas can be seen at their original locations. The PeirĂł de les Canals stands at the entrance to the village from Olocau, and the PeirĂł de Sant Gil is on the route from Forcall. These landmarks can be combined with a look at the village's architectural history.
Trails, River Landscapes, and Views
The PR-CV 229 La Mata circular trail is 8.40 kilometers long. Along the way, you will encounter examples of dry-stone architecture; the trail crosses the Cantavieja River twice and passes by Mas de les Clapisses. For a different landscape focus, take the PR-CV 247, which leads to the Carrasca de Guaita, a distinctive tree and viewpoint overlooking La Mata de Morella. Also known as the Carrasqueta de la Guaita, the tree is centuries old and stands on the summit of Tossal mountain. The two trails can be distinguished by their stated destinations and features.
Natural highlights include Les Calderetes, pools formed by the river near La Mata de Morella. Water levels can vary seasonally. Vegetation, wildlife, and rivers generally shape the natural environment, along with trails and PR and GR routes of varying difficulty.
Festivals and Seasonal Experiences
La festa de l’Onso is held every year and symbolizes the end of winter and the beginning of spring. At its heart is a person dressed in animal skins to represent a bear: they are symbolically hunted in the forest and brought to the village. They then parade through the village together with residents and visitors. Details may vary from one edition to the next.
San Antonio is celebrated in La Mata on the third weekend of January. Festivities include a bonfire, the blessing of animals, evening events, a wine-cellar tour, and shared meals around the fire. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates in advance.
The seasonal experience “Paisatges Medievals” includes visits to saffron fields around October. Allow approximately four hours; advance booking is required. Confirm the booking conditions before you travel. At the honey workshop, visitors learn about honey extraction and local varieties; tastings and workshops are also offered. The Espardenyeria also offers insights into footwear made locally and how it is produced. Check the current availability of both experiences.
