Discover Alboraya: Horchata, Huerta and Coast
Accommodation in Alboraya
Alboraya reveals itself through its horchata and chufa traditions, a historic townscape and the landscape between the Huerta and the coast. These themes offer different ways to shape your travel plans: you can learn about local production and festivals, explore architecture, or include routes and nature around the Barranco del Carraixet.
Horchata and Chufa in Alboraya
Traditional horchata is handmade fresh every morning at horchata establishments in Alboraya. The drink also has a special place in the annual calendar: DĂa de la Horchata is held every year in July, usually on the first or second Wednesday. Check the exact date before your trip.
The Orxata Experience includes a guided visit to an organic chufa field and a natural horchata production facility, followed by a tasting. Check the Experience dates before your trip. Another way to explore the subject is the Museo de la Horchata y de la Chufa. It is now located in AlquerĂa El Machistre and explains how horchata is made and chufa is grown, how both are marketed today, and how this was done two hundred years ago. The guided museum visit includes the museum, the outdoor areas of the AlquerĂa and a horchata tasting; advance booking is required.
Local History and the Ermita dels Peixets
The historic center preserves its street layout, as well as rural and urban houses in the Modernisme and Art Deco styles dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visible wagon-wheel marks can be seen on El Pont del Moro; the bridge dates from around the late 15th or early 16th century. The 17th-century dating of the Casa de Conde de Zanoguera refers to the building’s structure.
The Casa now houses the tourist information office, the headquarters of the “Chufa de Valencia” designation of origin, as well as municipal exhibitions and activities. As these functions may change, check which offerings are currently available before planning a specific visit. Another link to local history is the Ermita dels Peixets: on Whit Monday, Alboraya residents celebrate El Miracle dels Peixets with a pilgrimage from the town to the Ermita. It lies by the sea on the right bank of the Barranco del Carraixet and commemorates the Miracle dels Peixets, which, according to legend, is said to have taken place here in 1348.
Huerta, Routes and Coastal Landscape
Alboraya’s Huerta comprises cultivated land, irrigation channels, rural paths, barracas and AlquerĂas. Its landscape was shaped by an irrigation system that includes the Acequia Real de Moncada, the Canal del Turia and other channels managed by the Tribunal de los AigĂĽes. These channels were designed for gravity-fed irrigation. Alboraya is part of the agricultural area of the historic irrigation system of l’Horta de València, which the FAO has recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS).
The VĂa Verde Xurra passes through Alboraya and connects the town with Valencia and other settlements. A section in the Alboraya area starts at the crossing over the Barranco del Carraixet and follows its right bank to the mouth. This section is also important for birdlife: waterbirds use it year-round as a breeding area and as a stopover during migration.
On the coast, Playa Els Peixets offers a different landscape from an urbanized beach: it is the only non-urbanized beach in Alboraya and features dunes, golden sand and pebbles. The marina at Port Saplaya is known as “la pequeña Venecia” (“little Venice”).
Getting There and Finding a Hotel
From Valencia, Alboraya can be reached on Metro lines 3 (Rafelbuñol–Aeropuerto) and 9 (Alboraia Peris Aragón–Ribarroja de Túria). As routes may change, check current service before your trip. If you’re looking for hotels in Alboraya, first consider whether horchata and chufa, local history, or coastal and landscape themes will be a particular focus of your plans. You can then compare the location of each hotel with your plans.
