La Pobla del Duc: History and Landscape
Accommodation in La Pobla Del Duc
La Pobla del Duc lies in a landscape shaped by agriculture in the inland region. In the town, its historic heritage ranges from the church and houses in the centre to traces of earlier uses; routes with different focuses are also described. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural history and the townscape or a stay focused more on routes.
Church and Townscape
The Church of the Assumption dates from the 17th century. Its current bell tower was completed in 1789; it consists of two sections and has a hexagonal floor plan. The different dates provide a clear chronological context for the building’s history: the church is older than the current tower. In the historic centre, there are traditional and bourgeois houses featuring rural civic architecture. Some streets also have ceramic devotional shrines dating from the 17th to the 19th century. The townscape thus brings together large buildings, smaller religious features and houses whose architecture reflects a rural setting.
Traces of Earlier Uses
Parque del Calvario stands on the site of a former monastery. Another testament to the town’s architectural history is the washhouse, built in 1930 and renovated in 1988. A relic from the 1940s belongs to the winegrowing cooperative and is associated with agro-industrial processing and alcohol distillation. Together, these places point to different chapters in the town’s history: a former monastery site, a washhouse and the processing of agricultural produce.
Routes and Landscape
The route from La Pobla del Duc to Llutxent leads to the La Penyeta recreation area. It is located at the highest point in the municipal area, and the route offers panoramic views of the landscape. Other paths differ in their course and regional setting. The 11-kilometre “Senda morisca” branches off at La Pobla del Duc and passes through Castelló de Rugat, Rugat and Aielo. The “Jaume I en la Vall d’Albaida” route links several towns in the Vall d’Albaida over 49 kilometres and five stages. This makes it possible to distinguish a route branching off from the town from a multi-stage route through the region.
The Ruta de les Carrasques is one of the excursions around La Pobla del Duc and is associated with the 18th century. As route conditions may change, check them in advance. The air-raid shelter route leads to two shelters and the remains of a disappeared airfield. Check local access regulations before visiting.
Local Produce and Events
Local wine is bottled under the “RoscardĂ” brand. Mistela is also produced and sold in bulk in La Pobla del Duc; if you would like to buy either of these products, check where they are currently available in advance. “Els pastissets de moniato” are considered a typical Christmas pastry. This also indicates the seasonal character of the local cuisine.
A venue for the Mostra Internacional de Titelles is located at Plaça del Crist de l'Empar 1; its programme is seasonal. A regional guide from 2020 also lists a trade and gastronomy fair in La Pobla del Duc on the first weekend of October. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the current dates.
