Xaló can be explored through a wide variety of historical traces: waterworks and narrow streets tell us about living conditions in the past, while museums focus on archaeology, ethnology, and wine. Local festivals and trails add to the picture. When planning a stay, it is worth distinguishing between these themes: some places represent architectural history, while others reflect traditions or the region’s cultural landscape.

Historic Buildings and Museums

Bassa de Sapena o dels Arcs is near the town center and can be reached on foot. The 18th-century water basin is crossed by arches and columns that once supported its roof. Directional and information signs indicate two access routes; admission is free. Check the visiting conditions on site. Museu Etnològic i Arqueològic de Xaló offers another way to explore the town’s history: it displays objects that illustrate local traditions and ways of life throughout history. Three rooms are devoted to prehistory, archaeological heritage, and local ethnology.

Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María is also a distinctive part of the town’s historic character. It was built in the Neoclassical style between the 18th and 19th centuries. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross; the church has three naves and an octagonal bell tower. The main altar features the image known as “Virgen Pobre,” the patron saint of Xaló. The historic quarter also contains ceramic wayside shrines dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Ermita de Santo Domingo can be visited on Saturday mornings or by appointment; check whether a visit is possible on your chosen date.

Paths with Different Historical Themes

The routes in Xaló each have a different focus. Ruta dels Pous leads to four historic wells that supplied the town with water before the introduction of the drinking water supply. Ruta dels Martorells includes Plaça de Xaló, La Senyoria, Alqueria de Benibrai, Pas Estret, and Muntanya del Benibrai, now known as Devesa. Ruta del Xaló històric, by contrast, runs through the town’s oldest part, Ràfol de Xaló. Its narrow, winding streets date back to the Mudéjar period. The routes therefore have clearly distinct themes: water supply, documented place names, and the historic layout of the old quarter.

At Parque Botánico El Tossalet, you can discover the native flora of Vall de Pop and enjoy the walking trails. The park also serves as a traditional Stations of the Cross route. A path through the grounds passes a lime kiln and numerous wells, which are considered culturally valuable structures. Those interested in the relationship between the landscape and traditional buildings will find a different focus here than on the historic paths through the town center. Other landscape destinations named by Xaló include Serra de Bèrnia, Font de Cabanyes, and the ruins of the fort.

Wine, Regional Products, and Festivals

The active Museu del vi Masserof is housed in an 11th-century finca. Organic wine is produced there using traditional methods, and visitors can tour the museum. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check in advance. A market in Xaló also focuses on organic farming and traditional regional products, including tomatoes, lettuce, eggs, organic wine, and mistela. Check the current market day before your visit.

Several festivals offer insight into local customs. Festa en honor a la Mare de Déu Pobra is celebrated on the third Monday in October. It features the traditional dances of Xaló, “les danses,” and the distribution of “pambenet,” a local pastry specialty. Festa del Romer takes place every year on the last Saturday in April. It includes a pilgrimage to Hondo de la Solana to gather rosemary, followed by traditional “bollos”: pastries filled with peas. Check the exact festival dates before your trip.

Since 2012, Xalónia has been held annually on the first weekend of the year, showcasing local crafts. It includes Fira del vi i de l’embotit tradicional, Fira del comerç i artesanal, Festival de música i Cultura popular, and Fira solidària. The event also presents local products and cuisine, alongside a craft exhibition and performances in the historic center. Dates and program may vary, so it is advisable to check before your trip.

Xaló in Its Regional Context

Xaló is one of the municipalities participating in Ruta dels Riuraus. This route explores the historical heritage of the Muscat grape and the riuraus in Marina Alta via hiking and cycling routes. Tourist Info Vall de Pop is located on Paseo de la Alameda in Xaló and offers a local point of contact for travel planning.
