Pinoso: heritage, wine and nature
Accommodation in Pinoso
Pinoso brings together local history and dry-stone heritage with wine and food culture, as well as nature experiences. If you’re looking for a hotel in Pinoso, these themes can shape your stay: you can explore historic buildings and routes in the town centre, plan a hike or discover the local cuisine and wine tradition.
Culture and history in Pinoso
The Torre del Reloj stands in the historic centre and was built in the early 20th century. The clock inside dates from 1889 and still works with its original mechanism; its weights are wound by hand every 24 hours. The clock and tower therefore date from different periods. During a visit inside, you can experience the sights and sounds of the hundred-year-old clock up close. Check the visitor arrangements in advance, as they may change.
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol also reflects different phases of construction: it was founded in 1739 and took on its current appearance in 1888. The Ermita de Santa Catalina is carved into the rock of a small hill; inside is the image of the neighbourhood’s patron saint. The Ruta de Maxi Banegas offers another way to explore local history. It passes through places and buildings of tourist and cultural interest in the town centre and is connected with the work of local poet Maxi Banegas.
Casa de Don Pedro houses the Tourist Information Office, the Cuina Didáctica, a training space for gastronomy, an inner courtyard and a multipurpose event room. The dry-stone heritage includes retaining walls and shelters for quarry workers, used for agriculture or associated with earlier mining. The traditional craft of building dry-stone walls is represented in Pinoso by retaining walls and Cucos, among other structures, and is part of UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Nature and trails
The Senda dels Gal·lers is a marked, almost level 3 km circular trail. It starts at the Aula de la Naturaleza on Monte Coto and is of particular botanical interest. Every weekend, the Aula organises workshops, hikes and environmental days for the whole family. If you’re planning to take part in one of these activities, check the dates and availability before your trip; trail conditions may also change.
The Centro de Interpretación Ambiental Monte Coto includes a specially protected area that is part of a project to conserve and protect amphibian habitats. At a series of connected ponds, visitors may spot species such as the midwife toad, common toad, Iberian painted frog and common frog. Sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed. Designated paths through restored quarries also offer a chance to see native species planted as part of the revegetation work, as well as watering points for wildlife. Advance booking may be required for organised visits.
A visitor route on Monte Cabezo de la Sal leads to salt-rich channels, micro-reserves of flora and caves, and showcases the area’s natural and cultural heritage. Its organisation may depend on the season or group size, so check the visitor arrangements in advance.
Wine and cuisine
La Mostra de la Cuina del Pinós is a gastronomic event held every year in February. It focuses on traditional cuisine and locally produced seasonal ingredients. Dishes on offer include Gachamiga, Cocido con faseguras, Ajos pinoseros with Picat and Gazpachos; Arroz con conejo y caracoles is particularly well known. The dishes and participating venues may vary from one edition to the next, so check the specific dates and offerings before your trip.
Wine tastings are available at wineries in Pinoso and the surrounding area. Tours of the facilities may show the winemaking process, from grape reception to bottling. Confirm the arrangements for visits and tastings directly with the winery. The Casa del Mármol y del Vino offers experiences centred on marble and wine, including grape harvesting, stone quarrying, cellars and the properties of marble. Visits must be booked at least 15 days in advance; groups must consist of at least ten people. Confirm the visitor arrangements in advance with the municipal tourism service.
For another regional perspective, the Ruta de los Tres Pueblos del Interior connects La Romana, Pinoso and Algueña. It passes through landscapes of vineyards and traditional crafts in the interior of Alicante province. As arrangements may depend on the season or group size, it is advisable to enquire about visitor arrangements in advance.
