Rodriguillo: Nature, Wine and Traditions
Accommodation in Rodriguillo
El Rodriguillo lies at an altitude of about 450 metres on the southwestern flank of Cabeço de la Sal. The wetland, patron saint festivities and winegrowing give the destination different facets: you can incorporate nature, local history and wine tradition into your travel plans.
Wetland and Nature Programme
The Humedal y saladar del Rodriguillo-Faldar is home to exceptional flora and fauna adapted to this ecosystem, including many endemic species. The plant life and associated wildlife are also the focus of a municipal excursion, which introduces characteristic plants such as species of the genus Limonium and tamarisks, the area's fauna, and measures to restore it. For this activity, take note of the relevant period and make arrangements in advance.
A seasonal municipal programme also focuses on El Fartet and its habitat. It combines talks about the species with observing it in aquariums and breeding it in captivity. An outing takes participants to the El Prado wetland, one of the named Parajes of El Rodriguillo. There, participants learn about El Fartet in its natural habitat and about measures to restore and renaturalise that habitat. The programme is listed as running from 15 May to 30 June; check the specific dates before planning your trip.
Route and Directions
Route 8, “La montaña de sal,” is 42.6 kilometres long. It begins in Villena and ends at Cabezo de la Sal in Pinoso; it passes by El Rodriguillo and along the wetland there. From Pinoso, the road sequence follows the CV-836 and then the CV-840. The wetland is beside the CV-840 and has typical vegetation consisting of reeds and rushes. Check road conditions before travelling.
Hermitage and Patron Saint Festivities
The hermitage of El Rodriguillo is a later building that replaced an older hermitage. Local tradition is associated with the earlier building: according to the story, it stood at a place where San Pascual stopped to rest on his journeys between the Franciscan monasteries of Orito in Monforte del Cid and Jumilla. This story is part of local tradition.
The patron saint festivities in honour of San Pascual Baylón are celebrated on the weekend after his feast day in the calendar, 17 May. The exact programme may vary from year to year; check the dates before travelling. At one celebration, a procession passed through the settlement's main streets. Another glimpse of the festive tradition comes from 2024: soft gachamigas and “ruleras” were prepared over a wood fire and eaten at a communal breakfast.
Wine Tradition and Accommodation
The vineyards around El Rodriguillo supply wine to wineries in the town centre and in nearby Parajes. Some of these wineries preserve older winemaking methods. For Bodegas Volver, a wine tourism guide for 2026 lists daily guided tours of the vineyards and winemaking facilities. Tastings of five wines and local products are also mentioned. Advance booking is required; visits are available in Spanish or English, and prices are listed as approximate. Check availability before your trip.
Casa Rodriguillo has welcomed guests as a rural accommodation since June 2023. If you are considering staying here, check availability in advance. This lets you coordinate your accommodation plans with nature-related activities, possible programmes and local festival dates.
