In Calasparra, river landscapes and rice fields meet hiking trails, caves and buildings with a long history. When planning a trip, you can focus on outdoor activities, distinctive landscapes or cultural attractions.

Hiking and River Landscapes

The Sendero del Bayo in Calasparra is a circular route of just over six kilometres, suitable for hiking and enjoying nature. In addition, PR-category tourist circular routes run through the Calasparra rice-growing area and along the Río Segura corridor. They are mainly explored on foot. During spring sowing and autumn harvesting, mountain bikers and equestrian tourists also use them.

The Cañón de Almadenes is a protected natural area in the Región de Murcia. The Río Segura carved the canyon, which runs through Calasparra and Cieza and preserves valuable remnants of riparian forest. Activities in the canyon include hiking and canyoning, as well as river trips, especially by inflatable boat or kayak. These trips go down through the canyon. Operators and conditions may change, so check the specific details before taking a river trip.

Caves and Early History

The guided, illuminated route through the Cueva del Puerto is 700 metres long and passes through galleries and chambers with different speleological features. Along the way, visitors can see stalactite and stalagmite formations. The visit also includes the Sala de Minerales Luminiscentes, which displays around 1,500 minerals from around the world and is considered unique in a cave in Europe.

The Abrigos del Pozo, in the Cañón de Almadenes area near Calasparra, offer a different kind of cave visit. Their schematic rock paintings date to around 4300 BC and depict people, animals and symbolically charged objects. Visitors can use a restored prehistoric entrance, a wooden walkway and a footbridge that is also suitable for people with disabilities. Check local regulations before travelling.

The distances show two different formats: the guided cave route covers 700 metres, while the Sendero del Bayo is just over six kilometres long. This makes it possible to distinguish a cave tour from a circular hiking route without treating the experiences as equivalent.

Architecture and the History of Rice

The Santuario de la Virgen de la Esperanza de Calasparra is located in a grotto near the Río Segura. Carved out of the rock in the 17th century, the temple houses the two images of the Virgin known as La Pequeñica and La Grande. In the old town, the Iglesia de San Pedro is an example of regional Murcian Baroque architecture from the 17th century. Its three naves and Latin-cross floor plan define the church’s design.

Archaeological Collection

The Museo Arqueológico, housed in the Casa Granero building, preserves and displays almost 700 archaeological and natural science objects. The finds come from the municipality and surrounding area, and span the period from the Stone Age to the Muslim culture of the 13th century.

The History of Rice and the Landscape

A museum exhibition is dedicated to rice cultivation and everyday life connected with it. The second floor preserves heavy 19th-century machinery from the rice mill of the Condes del Valle de San Juan. There are also tools for sowing, harvesting and collecting rice, as well as ethnographic objects donated by local residents. The first floor explains the rice-growing area of the comarca, the cultivation process and recipes featuring rice as the main ingredient. Historical photographs of women and men working in the rice fields, along with various rice varieties from Calasparra, complete the exhibition.

The rice fields themselves also shape the destination: at certain times of the year, they are a tourist attraction, drawing visitors from the region and beyond. Seasonal visiting patterns may vary.
