Aledo combines historic buildings with striking landscapes. When planning your stay, you can focus on these different highlights: the townscape is shaped by medieval walls and buildings, while geological features and a circular route reveal other sides of the surrounding area.

Torre del Homenaje and historic walls

The Torre del Homenaje is a medieval building dating from the late 13th century. It has three floors and now serves as an interpretation centre for the town of Aledo. From its terrace, you can look out over the town centre and the Valle del Guadalentín; on clear days, the Mediterranean Sea is also visible.

The Muralla de Aledo is also part of the town’s historic character. Much of it has been preserved, and well-preserved sections of the wall separate the old town from the rest of the town. Aledo’s historic complex is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). La Picota adds to the medieval architectural heritage: it is the only surviving medieval monument in the Region of Murcia.

Church and art in Aledo

The Iglesia Santa María la Real was built between 1761 and 1803 on the site of a former mosque. Its design is Baroque, while the church also features Neoclassical elements. The construction period and different styles offer a concrete insight into the architectural history of the church.

The church houses works by Francisco Salzillo, including the Virgen de la Dolorosa and the Virgen de la Aurora, both dating from 1775. Anyone interested in art and religious architecture will find not only the building’s history here, but also two dated works by an important sculptor.

Geological features and landscape

Las Cuestas, an area with distinctive geological features and fossils, lies directly beside the walled complex. There you can see clay walls shaped by erosion. Its location next to the historic complex brings two different aspects of Aledo together: preserved walls and a landscape shaped by natural processes.

The Estrecho de la Arboleja is a small canyon carved into the limestone by water over thousands of years. Its features include small water outlets, limestone formations on the walls and small lagoons. These details give the site its own geological character and distinguish it from the historic buildings in the townscape.

Route and practical information

The Estrecho de la Arboleja can be reached via the C-21 towards Lorca. About two kilometres from Aledo town centre, signs point to the turn-off. There is a recreation area with information boards, barbecue areas, shaded spots and parking. Facilities may change, so check the current situation before your visit.

The Ruta de los 10.000 pasos is a circular route along a Via Verde from the Torre de Aledo to the Estrecho. Its two stated endpoints help you identify the route. Route conditions may change, so check the current situation before setting out.
