Sesma brings together early Gothic architecture, a historic esparto tradition and a landscape shaped by erosion. It also offers a circular route across the heights of Monte Ayuso and local festival traditions. When planning your stay, you can consider these themes separately: architecture and art offer a historical focus, Monte Ayuso provides a specific route, and the festivals add their own dates to your travel plans.

Church architecture and local history

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates back to an early Gothic structure from the beginning of the 13th century. Its main altarpiece was commissioned in 1625. The building’s origins and the altarpiece therefore belong to different periods: the early structure points to medieval architecture, while the commission for the altarpiece dates to the 17th century. Opposite the church is the Casa-Museo, dedicated to Father Tomás Esteban. He was a Jesuit missionary and martyr.

The hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Almuza is also an early Gothic building, dating from around 1200; today it lies in ruins. An archaeological site containing materials dating back to the Bronze Age was discovered on the hill where it stands. The hill’s history therefore goes back considerably further than the construction of the hermitage.

Esparto craftsmanship and landscape

Historically, Sesma was known as the only place in the Merindad of Estella for its esparto craftsmanship. This work included gathering albardĂn grass and crushing and twisting its fibres into ropes. These were used to make mats, baskets, saddle bags, sacks and agricultural ropes. The processes described link the raw material to a wide range of craft uses: the fibres were made into both ropes and everyday and agricultural items.

Sesma’s landscape consists mainly of gypsum and clay. Erosion has shaped them into separate ridges and valleys, with Peña Ezquerra standing out. Several streams cross the area, forming ravines that remain dry for most of the year. However, during storms they can carry raging waters.

The Monte Ayuso route

The Monte Ayuso circular route starts in Sesma and crosses the heights of Monte Ayuso. It is 14.30 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of 110 metres. The route offers views of the extensive, steppe-like plains of the Ribera of Navarre. Its length and elevation gain provide two specific details about the hike; the landscape description adds a view of the wide plains. Check local conditions before setting out.

Festivals and local traditions

Sesma’s patron saint festivals last seven days and begin in late August; the specific dates vary. They include the Pochada de Sesma, a communal meal on Calle de la Iglesia. Carnival features a fancy-dress gathering for children, a chocolate party for all children and the burning of Judas. The Feria de Artesparto in Sesma takes place on the last Sunday in April or on 1 May. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with a festival, check the specific dates in advance.
