Espronceda: Churches, Festivals and the Sierra de Codés
Accommodation in Espronceda
Espronceda lies at the foot of the southern slope of the Sierra de Codés, on a spur of land bordered by the Linares River and one of its tributaries. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Espronceda, historic buildings, local festival traditions and the Desojo–Espronceda route offer different ways to plan your stay.
Historic Buildings and Local History
The Crucero de Espronceda is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), or Asset of Cultural Interest. It stands on a double circular staircase and has a smooth, prismatic shaft. Above it is a capital-like top decorated with reliefs of saints.
The parish church of San Vicente Mártir was built in the second half of the 16th century by Cristóbal de Zúñiga and Juan de Miaja, following plans by Martín de Landerrain. Its nave is single-aisled and its apse is polygonal—that is, it has several sides. The main altarpiece was created in the mid-17th century. Its images depict scenes from Christ’s childhood, saints and the Assumption of Mary.
The chapel of Virgen del Campo, which houses a Romanesque depiction of the Virgin for whom it is named, stands within the village. In the parish church gardens there is a statue of Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas y Crespo, accompanied by two children. The public washhouse is also part of the village’s history: its covered stone basin was renovated between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, and it was associated with communal social life.
The Palacio Acedo is a private residence dating from the 17th century. Its façade and structure retain their historic character. Without special permission, visitors can only view its exterior. The municipal area is also home to the La Pedrigosa archaeological site, an Iron Age site with Celtiberian pottery and a perforated river stone among its artefacts.
Festivals and Traditions
On Santa Águeda, children visit their neighbours’ homes, sing a song and ask for “un choricico señora.” The food they collect is then used to prepare a merienda for them. The activities and participation may vary.
Espronceda’s rural Carnival takes place in February or March, two weekends after the Carnival date itself; the specific dates change every year. During the festival, Judas’s alleged misdeeds are read aloud before his effigy is beaten with sticks and burned on a bonfire. The event may change over time. A 2023 report describes how residents prepared for the celebration: among other things, they took care of the food, dressed Judas, sewed the costumes, wrote and read out the verdict, and collected firewood.
The patron saint festivities in honour of San Miguel take place on the last weekend of September; the exact dates and programme may change each year. The festival of San Isidro Labrador is celebrated on the Saturday closest to the saint’s feast day. The 2026 edition was scheduled to include a mass, a procession with special veneration of the Virgen del Campo, games for children and a communal meal.
Katxupin takes place on the eve of a local festival. The tip of a tree trunk burns in a fire, while some residents form a kind of train and chase other residents. Olentzero is scheduled for December 2026, 2027, 2028 and 2029. As future dates may change, check the details before making plans.
Landscape and Route
The Desojo–Espronceda route is described as 15.1 kilometres long, with 410 metres of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 3 hours and 10 minutes. From higher sections, you can see the steppe vegetation and the heights of the Sierra de Codés, Figueras and the Altos de la Dehesa. Route details may change as mapping or maintenance is updated; check them before setting out.
