Uterga on the French Way of St. James
Accommodation in Uterga
The French Way of St. James is a central travel reference for Uterga. Other points of interest include the Gothic Church of the Assumption, other religious sites, and the marked hiking trail on the Sierra del Perdón north of the village.
Uterga on the French Way of St. James
The French Way of St. James reaches Uterga after crossing the Erreniega stream on a wide path. The route continues through the village before turning toward Adiós. The section of the French Way of St. James from Pamplona to Puente la Reina is a 23.75-kilometer linear hiking route. The trail also includes a steep three-kilometer descent to Uterga. The two distances refer to different routes: 23.75 kilometers is the length of the entire section between Pamplona and Puente la Reina, while three kilometers is the length of the descent to Uterga.
Gothic church and altar reliefs
The Church of the Assumption is a Gothic building from the 16th century that was later altered. Its single-nave layout comprises four bays and a polygonal apse. “Single-nave” means that the main space is not divided into multiple aisles. The four bays divide it into structural sections, while the polygonal apse closes off the church space with several sides. The main altarpiece is neoclassical and dates from the 19th century. Reliefs from an older altarpiece dating to around 1600 have been reused in its base. The church’s basic structure and the altar’s furnishings therefore reflect different periods of origin.
Religious sites and traditions
Outside the village, the image of the Virgen de Irunbidea is located in a secluded spot shaded by holm oaks. Pilgrims visit the sacred site associated with the image. The San Nicolás Hermitage lies within the municipality of Uterga, a few minutes toward Legarda, and is attached to the cemetery. It formerly belonged to Olandáin. The procession of the Virgin Mary is also listed as intangible cultural heritage in Uterga. The image and the procession represent different forms of religious tradition: a focal point in a specific setting and a procession listed as intangible cultural heritage. The church and the hermitage also offer different points of interest: the church is notable for its architecture and altar, while the hermitage is notable for its location and former affiliation.
Hiking trail on the Sierra del Perdón
North of Uterga, a marked hiking trail on the Sierra del Perdón leads to the remains of old windmills. The trail offers views across the Pamplona Basin. This hike therefore has both a specific destination and a view of the landscape beyond the village itself.
Getting your bearings along the way
There is a spring in the village center where you can refill your water during a route. Check on arrival whether you can use the spring. You can factor this information into your plans for staying hydrated on the way.
