When planning a hotel stay in Fitero, you can choose different focuses: visiting the monastery, exploring thermal history, literary sites or routes through the landscape. Local pastry and festival traditions are also part of the town’s character. The specific sights and routes provide useful starting points for planning your own visit.

Monastery and Cultural Heritage

The Monastery of Fitero was the first monastery established by the Cistercian Order on the Iberian Peninsula; it has been recognized as a National Monument since 1931. Guided tours include the medieval kitchen, the lower cloister, the refectory and the chapter house. Check the current tour schedule before your visit, as times may change.

The collection of the parish of Santa María la Real de Fitero includes early modern liturgical vestments from the monastery’s former collection. The collection also includes an Islamic ivory casket from Halaf dating to the 10th century. These pieces add further tangible evidence of the monastery’s history to its heritage.

Thermal History at Baños de Fitero

The original thermal baths at Baños de Fitero date back to Roman times. The thermal water reservoir emerges at two springs with similar physical and chemical properties, associated with Balneario Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and Balneario Virrey Palafox. The Roman origins and the association with two springs describe different aspects of this thermal destination. If you are planning a visit, check the current operating details of the balnearios in advance.

Literary Traces and Local Specialties

The Ruta de Bécquer includes Cueva de la Mora, which inspired Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer’s legend of the same name. The route runs between the hotel at the spa named after the poet and the Monastery of Fitero. Another cultural and historical trail is the Huellas de Palafox route: it leads to a hidden hermitage believed to be the birthplace of Blessed Juan de Palafox y Mendoza. He was a bishop and viceroy of New Spain in the 17th century.

Local cuisine also draws on local traditions. Empanada de Fitero is associated with the Fiesta del Barranco festival, celebrated on the eve of the Feast of the Ascension. Local bakeries also make Tejas de Fitero, one of the town’s fine-pastry specialties.
