Grañón brings together the Camino de Santiago and historic buildings, as well as cultural attractions in the town and nearby area. It is the last town in the La Rioja region before the route continues towards Burgos. This provides a concrete point of reference when choosing your destination and planning a trip along the Camino de Santiago, with Grañón as a stop on the route.

The Camino and the landscape

The Camino de Santiago route between Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Grañón is 6.8 km long. This distance adds a specific route reference to the regional context. Together, these details identify Grañón as the last town in the La Rioja region on the way towards Burgos and as a reference point for a named section of the route. If you are planning a trip along the Camino de Santiago, you can take the town’s location and the length of this connection into account separately.

The terrain also varies: the southern sector is more mountainous and has steeper gradients, while gentler slopes dominate in the north. This contrast gives you a concise overview of the landscape beyond the route itself. If you are considering Grañón as a destination, you can distinguish between the more mountainous character of the south and the gentler terrain in the north.

Church and pilgrims’ hostel

The parish church of San Juan Bautista was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It preserves a baptismal font from the 12th century, considered the only surviving relic of the former Monastery of San Juan. This older object adds a link to the former monastery to the church’s architectural history.

The Hospital de Peregrinos de San Juan Bautista is located next to the parish church of the same name. The pilgrims’ hostel is housed in a former pilgrims’ hospital and is intended for pilgrims with a pilgrim credential.

Culture and destinations south of Grañón

The Semana Cultural is another local cultural attraction, organised by the Asociación Cultural de Amigos de la Ermita de Carrasquedo. El retablo de la luz offers a different focus: it is an immersive, multisensory video-mapping spectacle. It features photogrammetry, 3D modelling and animation, as well as particle and fluid effects. Its cultural focus therefore differs clearly from that of the historic buildings, with digital imaging techniques and multisensory design taking centre stage.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Carrasquedo is located about 2 km south of Grañón in a wooded area. The Baroque building dates from the late 17th century and has a Baroque main altarpiece by Diego de Ichazo. From Grañón, you can also take a cycling trip to the Ermita de los Judíos, located south of the town.

Getting there

Grañón is on the Autovía del Camino A-12, formerly the N-120, at kilometre 51; the town is also accessible by bus. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the timetable in advance.
