Huércanos offers a range of options for planning your trip, from architectural history and local traditions to routes through the surrounding area. Churches, chapels and a historic rollo provide insight into different chapters of the town’s history. For outdoor activities, there are several routes to choose from, with varying lengths and courses.

Churches and Architectural History

Work on the Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro Apóstol began in June 1554; the building program was completed in 1747. The church, built from stone blocks, comprises a nave with two bays, a transept, a five-sided, segmented octagonal apse and ribbed star vaults. The nave is divided into two bays; the transept forms the crosswise section of the church, while the apse closes off the altar area.

The interior furnishings also feature specific architectural details: the presbytery contains a choir stall in the Rococo style, and there are also several altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. Together, the structure and furnishings offer insight into the church’s different design elements, from its articulated floor plan to its later furnishings.

Another historic landmark is the Ermita de San Pantaleón. It was built after the Cofradía de San Pantaleón was founded in 1657. The Rollo Jurisdiccional, meanwhile, dates back to the privilege Juan II granted to Huércanos in 1443. The two structures thus represent different periods in the town’s history.

Traditions and Recurring Celebrations

A local tradition is also associated with the Ermita: according to the story, there is a brick there that young men and women step on with their right foot in order to get married. The tale connects a specific place with a traditional custom. Another recurring event is the Agua de las 24 horas procession, held on the last Saturday in April. It commemorates a royal water privilege dating from 1506.

Other feast days are San Pantaleón on July 27 and the celebration of the Virgen del Pilar on October 12. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the date in advance. This way, you can combine the history of the churches and town with the relevant festival date.

Walking and Mountain Biking Routes

Ruta 1 is a 14.60-kilometer circular route of low difficulty, suitable for mountain biking. It starts at Bodega Cooperativa de San Pedro Apóstol and passes near the ruins of the former Hospital de Peregrinos. In some sections, it follows the Camino de Santiago. The starting point, former pilgrims’ hospital and shared stretch of trail provide several distinct reference points along this route.

At 3.60 kilometers, Ruta 2 is shorter and follows a walking path along the banks of the Río Yalde, near the town center. After a stretch through vineyards, it leads to Área Recreativa de la Cerrada. Ruta 3 is 5.10 kilometers long; its first two kilometers follow the same section as the beginning of Ruta 1. When comparing the three routes described, both distance and the course of each route are relevant: the banks of the river and the vineyards feature in the description of Ruta 2, while Ruta 1 and Ruta 3 share part of their course.

Another option is the Subida a Negriales, which starts in Huércanos. It is described as a hiking or mountain biking route through the area around the town.

Landscape and Wine

Huércanos’ landscape is shaped by stepped glacis that connect the lower level with the terraces of the Najerilla. Agricultural land use is also quantified: vineyards account for 74.48 percent of it. These details provide a landscape context for the routes described, particularly where a route passes through vineyards.

Bodegas San Pedro is part of the local winemaking tradition. This family project combines history, tradition and innovation, and offers Rioja wines with distinctive character. When choosing a destination, you can therefore weigh two interests: historic buildings and events, or routes and wine country. Which side of Huércanos appeals to you depends on what you would like to focus on during your trip.
