A trip to Sorzano can have different focuses: the Iglesia de San Martín represents cultural heritage, the Belén Mecánico features traditional nativity scenes, and the Chopo de la plaza stands in the village square. There are also signposted routes through vineyards, pine forests and old paths, as well as the annual procession of the Doncellas in May. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, the purpose of your trip can provide an initial guide to when to travel.

Culture in Sorzano: the church and Belén Mecánico

The Iglesia de San MartĂn was built mainly in the 16th century and is one of the most significant cultural heritage features of the municipality of Sorzano. Its construction combines ashlar stone, irregular rubble masonry and brick. This gives you two specific aspects to consider when exploring the church: its period of construction and the combination of three materials in the building. The church is therefore a clear destination for travellers interested in architectural history and regional architecture.

The Belén Mecánico features 600 figures depicting traditional nativity scenes. It can be visited year-round. You can get the key from Mari Carmen in the white house opposite the bell tower, or from the Bar Centro Social de Sorzano at Plaza Juan Calvo, S/N. As the arrangements for collecting the key may change, it is advisable to confirm where to collect it shortly before your visit. The nativity scene offers a different focus from the church: here, the traditional scenes and 600 figures take centre stage, while the church draws attention to its period of construction and materials.

Village square and trails

The Chopo de la plaza stands in Sorzano’s village square. It is a black poplar (Populus nigra) estimated to be more than 130 years old. Alongside buildings and nativity scenes, this single natural feature offers another point of interest; the tree species and estimated age clearly define it as a landmark.

Sorzano has signposted routes belonging to the Senderos del valle del Iregua. They pass through vineyards, pine forests and old paths. These routes therefore offer a different focus from the cultural heritage sites: the emphasis is on the trail and the landscape features it passes through. Signposting and maintenance may change; check local information before setting out.

The procession of the Doncellas

A document from 1398 confirms Sorzano’s right to hold a procession to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de La Hermedaña. The annual procession of the Doncellas takes place on the third Sunday in May. Participants wear white clothing and carry decorated holly branches. The procession concludes with an open-air Mass in the forecourt of a hermitage; festive activities then follow in the village, including traditional dances. Check the event date locally before your trip. The date gives the Doncellas procession a clear seasonal reference point; the Belén Mecánico, by contrast, can be visited year-round.
