For your trip planning, Tizneros can be viewed through several themes: the Camino de San Frutos, places of architectural and commemorative interest, and local festival traditions. The 77-kilometre pilgrimage route runs from Segovia to the hermitage of San Frutos and is of great scenic and cultural interest. Would you prefer to connect your stay with a pilgrimage route, the landscape, buildings or local traditions? The route, architecture and festival dates offer different perspectives.

Camino de San Frutos and the Landscape

In Tizneros, the second stage of the Camino de San Frutos includes the Church of San Juan Degollado as a place to visit. It crosses meadows and pastureland and offers views of the Sierra de Guadarrama. On the same stage, the route crosses the Arroyo Polendos before reaching Basardilla. The first section of the Camino also passes through Tizneros. These different connections to the stages are useful for planning: the route through the village is part of the description of the first section, while the church stop, open landscape and stream crossing are specific features of the second stage. This makes it possible to distinguish the route through Tizneros from the individual features of the second stage, without equating the entire 77-kilometre route with a single section.

Churches, Working Life and Remembrance

The parish church of San Juan Bautista in Tizneros has a covered bell gable made of solid brick. These are two specific details relevant to its architectural character: the bell gable describes the form, while solid brick is the building material. Form and material thus offer distinct points of interest.

The Potro de Tizneros is located on Calle la Fuentona. Potros de Herrar are historical devices used for shoeing livestock. This offers a different way to explore the village’s history than its churches: the Potro points to a practical function in rural working life.

The sculpture “La Costurera” honours the sewing battalion that was active during the pandemic. During a pilgrimage walk along the Camino de San Frutos, walkers stopped in Tizneros in front of the sculpture. Here, a commemorative connection to contemporary history meets a specific pilgrimage walk. In terms of themes, this place of remembrance differs both from the church architecture and from the historical shoeing of livestock.

Nature and Festival Dates

The Arroyo de San Medel flows through Tizneros. It is useful for orientation to distinguish between the two streams: the San Medel flows through the village, while the Arroyo Polendos is crossed on the second stage before Basardilla. The meadows, pastureland and views of the Sierra de Guadarrama are, in turn, part of the Camino’s landscape description.

The festival dates may also influence when you travel. The patron saint festivities in honour of San Juan, the patron saint of Tizneros, take place in August. Reports from December 2025 also give 29 August as the date for the celebration of San Juan Degollado and the first Sunday in May for the festival of the Virgen de Veladiez. They describe the May celebration as a joint festival of the municipality of Espirdo’s three settlements. If a particular festival is important to your plans, check the date in advance.
