Otero De Herreros
Accommodation in Otero De Herreros
Otero de Herreros lies at the foot of the Sierra del Quintanar. The town centre preserves elements of traditional metallurgy, as well as rural homes and their associated outbuildings. Churches, religious traditions, and the Cerro de los Almadenes mining area reveal different aspects of the town’s history.
Church Architecture and Art
The Iglesia de los Santos Justo y Pastor stands at the highest point of the municipality of Otero de Herreros and is visible from many places. It is dedicated to Saints Justus and Pastor. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross. The single-nave body is divided into three sections; the polygonal apse is divided into three bays.
A single-nave body has one nave; the three sections divide this elongated space. The polygonal apse forms an end with several sides and is itself divided into three bays. The side panels of the main altarpiece feature two large paintings by Francisco Camilo, dated 1659. The architectural design and the works of art offer distinct points of interest for exploring the parish church.
Pilgrimage and Building History
Outside the town, near a stream, lies the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Adrada, a place of particular local devotion. Its Gothic design and building history span several periods: the first phase of construction dates to the late 15th century, and work continued over the following centuries.
The Día de las Aguas is traditionally celebrated in May. During the celebration, the image of the patron saint, the Virgen de la Adrada, is carried along the Stations of the Cross to the parish church, where it remains for fifteen days before returning to the hermitage. The exact dates vary each year, so check the date before your trip. The parish church and the Ermita de la Adrada offer distinct points of interest: the former for its floor plan and altarpiece, the latter for its Gothic architecture and Marian devotion.
The Ermita de San Roque, also known as the Humilladero and Vera Cruz, is also a protected property of cultural interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, B.I.C.). It stands on a hill overlooking the road. Inside, murals cover the walls except for the altar area; those on the left depict scenes from the Passion of Christ. Construction work on the hermitage was carried out in 1583 under the direction of stonemason Juan de Gogorza.
Mining History and Archaeological Traces
Cerro de los Almadenes is an archaeological mining area within the municipality of Otero de Herreros. Copper mining there has been documented from prehistoric or protohistoric times to the beginning of the 20th century. On 9 June 2022, Cerro de los Almadenes was protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (B.I.C.) in the archaeological zone category.
Surviving features include mine entrances and galleries, areas for crushing and washing ore, spoil heaps, and roasting furnaces, smelting furnaces, and reverberatory furnaces. The long history of copper mining and the different facilities used to process the ore make this a distinct focus from the history of churches and pilgrimages: here, mining and its technical traces take centre stage.
The Cañada Real Soriana Occidental
The first stage of the Camino Natural de la Cañada Real Soriana Occidental, between El Espinar and Otero de Herreros, begins beside the municipal cemetery and the Otero de Herreros recreation area. Along the route, the Pililla and Tejera streams are crossed via restored stone bridges. This stage forms a distinct theme alongside sacred architecture and mining: its described landmarks are the starting point by the cemetery and recreation area, and the stream crossings via stone bridges.
