El Maíllo offers botanical trails, geological walks, an astronomical viewpoint and historic sights. If you’re looking for hotels in El Maíllo, you can first consider whether nature watching, cycling, geology or local history will shape your stay.

Botanical Trail and Nature Watching

The “Los Molinos” Accessible Botanical and Cycling Route runs entirely through the municipality of El Maíllo and within the Las Batuecas–Sierra de Francia Natural Park. As its name suggests, the route combines botanical and cycling themes; it is suitable for mountain bikes. Continuous signposts and trail markers indicate the way. Explanatory information sheets are linked via QR codes, and accessible audio descriptions are also available. If you rely on specific markers or digital information, check that they are currently available before your visit.

Ruins of former mills, which were already in existence in the 18th century, can be seen along the Arroyo de la Rivera. The route also passes through a rare, declining peat bog ecosystem. Its acidic, nutrient-poor wetlands remain waterlogged for almost the entire year. The El Maíllo peat bog is home to the carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia, which feeds on insects. Downy birch (Betula pubescens) is another feature: El Maíllo is among the places on the Iberian Peninsula with relict birch populations, and specimens of this species can be seen along the route.

At certain points along the Botanical Route, you can watch and listen to songbirds, particularly passerines. The route thus combines botanical themes and opportunities to observe wildlife with visible traces of past mill use. Sightings are not guaranteed.

Geological Walks and Comparing Routes

The “Geology and Urban Biology around El Maíllo” route is a circuit through the town with four stops. There, you can see quartz veins, trace fossils, ripple marks and relict soils from tropical climatic periods. Those interested in geology can also choose from several routes with different focuses: the circular Paseo medioambiental por la Ribera is 8.5 kilometres long and follows the banks of the Morasverdes River, with six stops along the way. “Maravillas en El Pinalejo” has four stops along the Tenebrilla River, where old gold-panning sites and marine fossil structures can be seen in situ.

“Relief and Astronomy” is located in the El Bardal–Corral del Tamborilero area and offers panoramic views of the landforms characteristic of the Sierra de Francia, with their inverted forms. Another option is the seven-kilometre El Maíllo–Peña de Francia hiking trail, which runs through the Las Batuecas–Sierra de Francia Natural Park. The distances distinguish the two routes for which lengths are given, while the stops and themes offer further points of comparison.

The Mirador Astronómico de El Maíllo was inaugurated at the Asomadera áspera site on 15 June 2026. If you plan to visit the viewpoint, check the current access regulations in advance.

La Hoya and Sights in the Town

The La Hoya recreation area lies on the outskirts of El Maíllo. Its facilities include a camping area, a picnic area, barbecue grills, a swimming pool and sports courts; there are also accessible paths, toilets and picnic tables. Check that the facilities are currently available before visiting.

The town’s history can also be traced through specific buildings. Casa Baja de El Maíllo was built by Dominicans in the 15th century and has been a protected monument since 1956. A project to install paintings depicting the main Gospel scenes of Mary Magdalene began in 2023 at the parish church of Santa María Magdalena; the project was completed in 2025.
