Monleras combines open landscapes with traces of local history and culture. The landscape includes dehesa and water, as well as granite outcrops, holm oak woodland, farmland and pasture. During your stay, you can focus on these different aspects of the area: the landscape, a route to the Molino de Samuel, or Monleras’ architectural and cultural history.

Landscape and Routes

Monleras’ open landscapes are ideal for hiking, cycling, water activities and sport fishing. Some activities may be seasonal or depend on local conditions. The options range from routes through the landscape to activities on the water; check in advance what is relevant to your planned activity.

One specific route is the Ruta del molino y la rivera. It follows the narrow valley along the riverbanks to the Molino de Samuel. Unlike the general activities described for the open landscapes, this route has a named destination and a described stretch of valley. The Poza de la Naveta lies about 500 metres from the town of Monleras and has been restored.

Architecture and Local History

Examples of traditional and vernacular architecture are among the visible buildings. Rubble-stone walls and doors and windows with granite lintels are characteristic of this style. Three round arches remain at the former Alhóndiga, a former grain store. The stretches of wall and arches point to the building’s former use, while the granite lintels show another feature of local architecture.

A manor house is also linked to Monleras’ history: at the beginning of the 14th century, the Infante Don Sancho de Castilla el de la Paz lived there. He was the son of the Infante Don Pedro and the grandson of King Alfonso X the Wise. After Don Sancho’s death, the manor house became a convent for nuns. This sequence links the use of a single building to two different periods in its history.

Mills, Exhibitions and Culture

The Molino de Samuel was restored as an ethnographic museum. When there is enough water in the millrace, you can watch grain being milled there. The Centro de Interpretación del Bajo Tormes is housed in Monleras’ former granaries and provides information about the landscape of the Bajo Tormes. The mill and the interpretation centre therefore have different focuses: one on grain processing, the other on the landscape of a region.

The Centro de Interpretación also presents Víctor Casas’ permanent audiovisual work “Toco el Cielo Toco la Tierra” on five different screens. It showcases the area’s land uses, customs, landscapes, ways of life and people. The five screens are part of a single presentation; its subjects range from the landscape to the people connected with it.

The amphitheatre in Monleras hosts theatre and music performances, including events in the Festival de Artes Escénicas. The festival programme is seasonal. The amphitheatre itself was built stone by stone through the collective efforts of local residents. In 2026, the Festival de Teatro y Artes Escénicas de Monleras reached its 31st edition. The venue’s construction and the festival series represent two different aspects of cultural life.

The Feria de oficios focuses on traditional crafts, as well as local agricultural and food products. If you would like to include the fair in your travel plans, check the dates before your visit. This lets you distinguish a planned visit from the landscape and architectural features described as available year-round.

Plan Your Journey

The route to Monleras follows the SA-300 to Ledesma and then the SA-302. Check road conditions and your route before setting off. This keeps your journey planning based on the stated sequence of roads, without assuming an unspecified travel time.
