Sotoserrano: River Landscapes, Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Sotoserrano
If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Sotoserrano, you can start by considering which themes you want to shape your stay: trails through varied natural landscapes, river scenery, local history or the region’s olive oil tradition. The different routes and sights provide concrete ways to get to know the town from various perspectives.
Circular Trails, Rivers and Nature
The Ruta de los Tres RĂos is a circular trail that starts and ends at Sotoserrano’s Plaza Mayor. It leads to the confluences of the Francia and Cuerpo de Hombre rivers with the RĂo AlagĂłn. Along the way, the natural landscapes change: the route passes through forests of holm oaks, cork oaks, strawberry trees, Pyrenean oaks and downy oaks, as well as along riverbanks where poplars, willows and alders grow. Sotoserrano’s location at the confluence of the AlagĂłn, Francia and Cuerpo de Hombre rivers also makes the rivers a defining feature of the surrounding area.
The Ruta de la Cepa focuses on a different landscape. This circular trail starts and ends in Sotoserrano, is 5.9 kilometres long and passes some vineyards and terraced olive groves on the hillsides. Its specific distance and agricultural landscape provide a clear description of the route. The Ruta de los Tres RĂos, by contrast, focuses on the river confluences and changing vegetation.
Other named trails offer different perspectives: a section of the GR-10 passes through Sotoserrano, as does the Ruta cicloturista del rĂo AlagĂłn. On the RĂo AlagĂłn in Sotoserrano, you can experience stretches of whitewater, especially in spring during the snowmelt. This seasonal feature adds another river-related experience to the routes.
Views and Buildings in Town
South of Sotoserrano, the RĂo AlagĂłn forms the Meandro Melero on the border with Cáceres province. You can see the meander from the Mirador de la Antigua and Mirador de Romerosa viewpoints. These viewpoints offer a different way to experience the landscape from the circular trails, whose descriptions focus more on river courses, vegetation, or vineyards and olive groves.
Several buildings with different dates are associated with the town’s history. The Torre del Reloj, built in the 16th century, stands in the Plaza Mayor. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in the 13th century in the Romanesque style. The Fuente Pública, with two spouts, is located on Calle de La Aldea and dates from 1791. The Ermita del Humilladero is also one of Sotoserrano’s sights.
These dates mark different points in time: the church dates from the 13th century, the tower from the 16th century, and the fountain from 1791. In addition to these buildings, historic route connections are part of the town’s history. Sotoserrano was part of the Camino de Santiago and the Roman VĂa de la Plata. These are historical connections.
A local legend takes you to El EspolĂłn: according to the story, during a Roman siege, an Alan village hid its possessions there, including a gold goat weighing eight kilograms. It has not been found to date. This is a legend, and thus a distinct part of local tradition alongside the identifiable buildings and historic routes.
Olive Oil Tradition and Getting There
Sotoserrano is also one of the towns in the Sierra de Francia associated with the olive oil tradition. In the region, you can explore this tradition and taste olive oils. This adds a culinary connection to the landscape, complementing the routes through vineyards and terraced olive groves.
