Discover Ibeas de Juarros
Accommodation in Ibeas de Juarros
Ibeas de Juarros is a starting point for visits to the archaeological sites of Atapuerca. The town itself offers the Camino de Santiago, historic buildings, and regional cuisine as distinct subjects to explore. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the exhibitions, guided visits, and routes.
CAYAC is located on the outskirts of Ibeas de Juarros, on the N-120 at kilometer 97 on the road from Burgos to Logroño. It serves as a meeting point for visitors; from there, coaches travel to the archaeological sites of Atapuerca. CAYAC is therefore both a place to see an exhibition and a starting point for guided visits.
Atapuerca: Exhibitions and guided visits
CAYAC houses the permanent exhibition “La Sierra de Atapuerca, patrimonio natural y cultural” (The Sierra de Atapuerca: Natural and Cultural Heritage). The Aula Emiliano Aguirre in Ibeas de Juarros also houses a permanent exhibition. Its contents include images and texts, as well as original and replica stone tools and bones from the Atapuerca sites. The two exhibitions therefore have different focuses: the title at CAYAC encompasses the natural and cultural heritage of the Sierra, while the Aula Emiliano Aguirre showcases specific materials from the sites.
Guided visits to the archaeological sites depart from CAYAC and are conducted by coach. The FundaciĂłn Atapuerca is based in Ibeas de Juarros and organizes visits to the sites and related facilities. The sites themselves were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Exhibitions in the town and guided visits to the archaeological sites are therefore different ways to explore the Atapuerca theme.
Local history and buildings
The earliest known written records attesting to the existence of Ibeas de Juarros date back to 921. A later chapter in the town’s history can be seen in the Iglesia de San MartĂn Obispo: it was built in the late 15th century and reflects the transition from Romanesque to Cistercian Gothic. The Baroque tower was added in 1652. This chronology makes clear the difference between the church’s construction and a later addition to the building.
The Cruz de Canto also tells of an earlier political boundary: it is identified as a sculptural boundary marker between the former Kingdom of Navarre and the Kingdom of Castile. The sculpture was made from a single block of limestone and features a mutilated lauburu on a pedestal. Its form and historical significance distinguish this monument from the church’s architecture.
The Iglesia de San MartĂn in Ibeas de Juarros is associated with the Camino de Santiago. Nearby, beside the cemetery of San Millán, the remains of the Monasterio de San CristĂłbal de Ibeas have also been preserved. The church and monastery ruins offer two distinct historical points of reference: the church is associated with the Camino, while the monastery ruins are identified by their location near the cemetery.
Camino, routes, and landscape
The Camino de Santiago passes through Ibeas de Juarros, following the route of the N-120. The Ruta del Ferrocarril and the long-distance GR-82 trail are also offered as routes in the municipality and surrounding area. Their names already distinguish the types of routes on offer: the Ruta del Ferrocarril is listed as a tourist route, while the GR-82 is a long-distance trail.
A viewpoint south of Ibeas de Juarros, across the river, offers another perspective on the town and its surroundings. From there, you can see the municipality and the Sierra de Atapuerca.
Alubias rojas de Ibeas and regional cuisine
Alubias rojas de Ibeas (Ibeas red beans) are grown using traditional methods on the banks of the Arlanzón River. The beans are used to prepare the traditional olla podrida. At Los Claveles, this dish is one of the restaurant’s main specialties. This offers a concrete way to understand the local cuisine: the beans are grown locally and then used in a traditional dish that also plays an important role on the Los Claveles menu.
Ibeas de Juarros therefore offers several distinct reasons to visit: the Atapuerca-related visits and exhibitions, the Camino and other routes, local history, and regional cuisine. You can choose what matters most for your stay by looking at the specific activities and subjects on offer.
