Villarcayo lies on the banks of the Nela River. Historic buildings, sacred art, walking and cycling routes, and events throughout the year offer different ways to plan your stay.

Riverside and El Soto Natural Area

The Nela is a shared point of reference for Villarcayo and the El Soto park complex: both lie on the riverbank. El Soto is a large natural area with bathing areas. If you would like to include nature and water in your day’s plans, this park is a specific place to start. Conditions at the bathing areas may vary; check them before your visit.

Heritage and Townscape

Plaza Mayor and Casa Consistorial together form a rural urban ensemble typical of northern Castile. The town hall, the Casa Consistorial on Plaza Mayor, was built in 1891. The Torre del Reloj dates from the 16th century. These different dates give you two specific points of reference for the town’s architectural history.

The entire town of Villarcayo was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Conjunto Histórico” category on June 19, 2007. This designation applies to the town as a whole; by contrast, the dates 1891 and the 16th century refer to two named buildings. The cultural offerings also include an award-winning museum of sacred art.

Walking and Cycling

For walking, the Red de Senderos de Pequeño Recorrido de Villarcayo (PRC) comprises seven circular trails. They have been certified by the Federación de Montaña, Escalada y Senderismo de Castilla y León. Trail information may change; check the latest details before setting out.

Cycling enthusiasts can explore the BTT Sendas de Castilla la Vieja, a named cycling route that starts in the extensive, green El Soto de Villarcayo park. Villarcayo also offers a municipal public bicycle rental service. As its availability may change, check in advance whether the service is available during your trip. There are different options to choose from: a network of seven circular walking trails and a cycling route that starts in the park.

Festivals and Event Dates

On the evening of July 17, Villarcayo celebrates the Fiesta de la Guinda y Santa Marina. The Junta de Castilla y León has recognized La Guinda as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional. In August, the patron saint festivities in honor of Our Lady and Saint Roch, the Fiestas de San Roque, are celebrated on August 15 and 16. The Concurso Nacional de Saltos, a national show-jumping competition, also takes place in the last week of August.

The August events have different schedules: the Fiestas de San Roque take place on two specific days, while the Concurso runs for a week. The Concurso de Pucheras takes place in December. Festival programs may vary from year to year; check the dates for your travel year if an event is important to your trip.

Weekly Market and Travel Planning

Since 1571, Villarcayo has held the privilege of hosting a weekly market every Monday. Check before your trip whether the market is currently taking place. This gives you different dates to plan around: Monday for the market, specific days or weeks for the festivals, and December for the Concurso de Pucheras. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the latest information in advance.
