If you want to discover Cavia through its history and architecture, the Church of San Pedro Apóstol and the Casa Fuerte de Los Rojas offer specific points of interest. There is also a long local history, traces of former grain mills and a century-old poplar in the Isla area. The historic buildings represent different periods and can therefore also be distinguished by their dates.

History and Religious Architecture

A document dated 1 March 899 is preserved as documentary evidence for Cabia. The Church of San Pedro Apóstol was built from the 16th century onwards on foundations that are thought to be medieval. This chronology alone points to several building phases: the church building dates from the early modern period, while its foundations may go back further.

One particularly well-documented feature inside is the 12th-century Romanesque baptismal font. It is decorated with an arcade and figures of the twelve apostles and three deacons. This makes the font's sculptural design a focus alongside the church's architectural history. Those interested in Romanesque art will find a clearly identifiable example here, distinct from the church building's later architecture.

The tower of San Pedro Apóstol also belongs to a different building phase: it is Neoclassical. Fernando González de Lara designed it; José Cortés del Valle carried out the design in 1783. Together with the foundations thought to be medieval and the Romanesque baptismal font, the tower shows that the church's history is not limited to a single period.

The Casa Fuerte de Los Rojas

The Casa Fuerte de Los Rojas was built in the 15th century over an older structure dating from the 13th century. This earlier structure consisted of a tower and a defensive wall. Two construction periods can therefore be distinguished at the castle: the older fortified structure and the later building erected over it. In 1949, the Casa Fuerte was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest).

Its documented architectural features include a tower with a rhombus-shaped floor plan, defensive walls and reinforcing corner towers. There are also loopholes and a bricked-up Ajimez window. These details give the castle a different architectural profile from the church: here, fortifications and the development of the complex shape the way its architecture is viewed, whereas at San Pedro Apóstol, different religious building phases come together with the Romanesque baptismal font.

Route and Local Landscape

The Route of the Lower Arlanzón and the Fields of Muñó is approximately 75 kilometres long and leads to Cabia, where it highlights the Casa Fuerte de los Rojas. This makes it possible to consider the castle as part of a longer route rather than viewing it only as a standalone building. The approximate length is a useful planning reference; as route conditions can change, it is advisable to check the route before setting out.

The area's history also includes the use of its water-rich landscape, which made it possible to establish several grain mills. These mills are part of Cabia's agricultural and artisanal past. A century-old poplar also stands in the Isla area. If this particular natural landmark is important to your plans, it may be worth checking on its condition before your visit.

There are several ways to shape the focus of your trip: the church's building phases and features, the Casa Fuerte's defensive architecture, the history of the mills, or the route and its approximate length. You can plan your trip around whether you are most interested in religious art, historic fortifications, or the connection between local history and the route.
