Discover Viveiro
Accommodation in Viveiro
Viveiro brings together coastal landscapes, historic buildings and long-standing events. If you’re looking for a hotel in Viveiro, these different highlights can help shape your trip: would you like to explore a long beach, learn about architectural history or plan your stay around Semana Santa? The places and themes offer practical starting points for planning.
Beach and coastal landscape
Praia de Area is in the Area district on the slopes of Monte Faro, 4.5 kilometres from Viveiro. The beach is 1,200 metres long, with white sand and calm waters. Dunes surround Praia de Area, and a forest stretches down to the sea. The dunes are considered significant for their landscape value; Insua de Area is a refuge for seabirds.
Praia de Area and Praia de Seiramar offer different points of interest: Area stands out for its length and landscape, while Seiramar is designated as a dog-friendly beach. This designation has been in place since 2024; rules for bringing dogs may change. So check the current regulations before your visit.
Architectural history and Semana Santa
The Porta de Carlos V, also known as Mayor or del Castillo, was built in 1548. It is one of the three surviving gates of Viveiro’s former city walls. The gate is both a specific historical landmark and a visible remnant of the city’s fortifications.
San Francisco is a former monastery and is now the parish church of Santiago. The church has a 12th-century Romanesque portal and a Gothic apse. It also houses several exhibition rooms displaying the processional images of Viveiro’s Semana Santa. Its architecture and processional images offer different ways to explore the religious history of the area.
Viveiro’s Semana Santa is classified as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. During Semana Santa, the Encuentro procession takes place in Praza Maior and the atrium of Santa MarĂa. Dates vary, so if you want to plan your trip around the procession, check the dates for the relevant year.
Another tradition is the Romaxe do Bo Xantar de Naseiro. The 2026 edition took place from 21 to 26 August at Campo da Festa de Naseiro in Viveiro, with music, food, tradition and activities for all ages. If you’d like to include a future edition in your travel plans, refer to the dates published for it.
Nature and digital discovery
In the wider municipality of Viveiro, in the ChavĂn district, lies Souto da Retorta, which is designated a natural monument. A remarkable eucalyptus is reported to be 61.78 metres tall and 7.55 metres in circumference. In addition to this grove, Souto has around 600 other large trees. The eucalyptus’s measurements and the number of other trees offer two different insights into this natural area.
Viveiro’s augmented-reality experience lets you discover well-known places, routes and 3D reconstructions on your mobile phone as you walk around the city. Digital features may change, so check what’s available before your trip.
Getting your bearings during your stay
