Adelán offers several specific points of interest for planning your trip: distinctive architectural styles, traditional festival dates and the Val do Ouro fishing area. If you are interested in architectural history, the towers and pazo buildings can be distinguished by their floor plans and structures. Festival dates follow traditional date rules; when fishing, be sure to check the applicable regulations and season.

Architectural styles and heraldic details

The Torre de Adelán ou Casa de Basanta has a square floor plan and two extensions. Its coat of arms depicts a tree, a well, a headless snake and a Seal of Solomon. The basic shape and the coat of arms offer two distinct points of reference: the floor plan describes the layout of the building, while the four motifs define its heraldic design.

The Casa Grande de Cadeirido has a masonry tower with a hipped roof and crenellation-shaped pinnacles. A hipped roof slopes down on all sides; the pinnacles are described as crenellation-shaped elements. Compared with the Torre de Adelán ou Casa de Basanta, the Casa Grande stands out for its tower structure, roof and pinnacles, while the Torre catches the eye with its square floor plan and two extensions.

The two pazo complexes also differ in their layout. The Pazo da Escoura consists of a central, tower-like building with battlements and several attached sections. The Pazo de Adelán has a rectangular basic shape, with a projecting tower. This makes it possible to contrast Escoura’s central core with its extensions with Adelán’s rectangular building and projecting tower.

Visiting and getting your bearings

The Torre de Adelán ou Casa de Basanta, the Casa Grande de Cadeirido and the Pazo da Escoura are privately owned. Check the current visiting arrangements before setting out. To find the Torre, use the road from Mondoñedo and the turnoff for Carballido and San Acisclo; the pazo is about 50 metres farther on.

Festival dates and fishing area

In Adelán, the festivities for San Antonio are traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday after 25 July. The festivities for San Ramón traditionally take place on 31 August. The distinction is useful when planning your dates: San Antonio is determined by the Sunday after a fixed date, while San Ramón falls on a fixed calendar date. If you would like to include a festival day in your stay, confirm the programme for that year locally.

The Val do Ouro fishing area is classified as a trout fishery and a catch-and-release fishing area. Its lower boundary is the mouth of the Arroyo de Adelán in Alfoz. The classification and boundary are set out in a Xunta resolution dated 20 January 2009. Before fishing, check the current fishing regulations and seasonal requirements.
