Portomarín brings together a late Romanesque fortified church, a historic ensemble and landmarks along the French Way. When planning your trip, you can focus on different interests: architectural history, a measured stage of the route or the festival celebrated every year at Easter. Bridges and steps add further historical connections; paths by the reservoir and a viewpoint round out the landscape. You can organise your stay around the interests that matter most to you.

Church and historic buildings

The Church of San Juan (San Nicolás) was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries as a late Romanesque fortified church by the Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. Its defensive character and Romanesque construction period are key to understanding the building. Inside are side chapels with canopies, where wall paintings have been preserved. The church thus combines a specific history of the Order with architectural details that go beyond its exterior appearance.

The historic ensemble of Vila de Portomarín also includes a Roman bridge dating from the 2nd century. The Pazo de Berbetoros is also known as Casa de la Marquesa and was partly relocated to its present site. Only the solana, the building’s most distinctive feature, has been preserved there. Together with the church, these sites offer different ways to explore the town’s history: a medieval fortified church, a Roman-era structure and a pazo whose surviving feature stands out in particular.

Steps, the Miño and the French Way

The Escalinata de Portomarín is made of granite and incorporates an arch from the old medieval bridge. It leads to the small Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows and has 46 steps. Known as the Escalinata e Capela das Neves, the ensemble provides pilgrims on the French Way with direct access to Portomarín after crossing the Miño. The reused arch and its connection to the route make the steps both a historic structure and a clearly identified landmark.

The section of the French Way from Portomarín to Gonzar is 8.2 kilometres long and has a moderate to high difficulty level. The estimated duration is one hour and 35 minutes. Distance, difficulty and time give you different reference points for planning the stage; the time is explicitly an estimate. Check the latest route information before planning, as distances and time estimates may be revised.

Ponte Novo also offers a different perspective on the paths by the reservoir: you can cross it by car, and there are pedestrian paths on both sides where you can walk along the reservoir. At the Escalinata e Capela das Neves, the relocated church offers a panoramic view of the reservoir on the Miño. The extent of this view may vary with the weather and vegetation. Portomarín is also part of the Ribeira Sacra e Serras do Oribio e Courel area. It stretches across the middle reaches of the Miño and its main tributary, the Sil, as well as the surrounding mountain ranges.

Festival date and planning your stay

The Festa da Augardente e da Anguía takes place every Easter Sunday in honour of Portomarín’s aguardiente. Its date changes with Easter. Each year, the Cabildo Xeral da Orde Serenísima da Alquitara appoints new knights and ladies. They pledge to defend, promote and celebrate Portomarín’s aguardiente. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific date before making arrangements.

There is a municipal motorhome parking area in the centre with four spaces; services are nearby. If you are travelling by motorhome, the stated capacity is a useful planning reference. Check the current situation on site, as capacity and conditions may change. When choosing where to stay, you can also consider whether the architectural history, the Camino stage or the Easter date—which changes each year—is the main reason for your trip.
