Camposo: Churches, Granite and Dovecotes
Accommodation in Camposo
Camposo can be understood through its clearly distinguishable architectural styles and a named route. Its architectural landmarks range from the Romanesque Igrexa parroquial de Camposo to a granite building and several dovecotes. Some of the places described are in the hamlet of Laxes, which belongs to the parish of Camposo (Santiago). This offers two different perspectives for planning a trip: the design of individual buildings and Route 3, “Camposo, Cela e Quinte,” which passes through Laxes.
Cultural Heritage in Laxes
The annex to the Xunta’s autonomous basic plan from December 2025 lists the Conxunto de Laxes as a cultural heritage site in Laxes, within the parish of Camposo (Santiago). The Pazo de Laxes is also in Laxes, in this parish. The place names can be distinguished: Laxes refers to the specific location, while Camposo (Santiago) refers to the parish. This makes the connection between each building and its respective place name clear.
Church and Granite Architecture
The Igrexa parroquial de Camposo is a Romanesque church. Separately, the original construction of the Igrexa de Camposo has been preserved, with the exception of its Renaissance main portal. The stated exception therefore applies specifically to the portal, not to the entire church. The Casa Grande de Camposo is notable for its basic form and material: it is a large, rectangular house made of carefully dressed granite blocks. The Casa Grande de Laxes has a different character: it is a group of buildings surrounded by a wall. Its entrance is at the upper corner, with a coat of arms above the round arch. The comparison highlights two different architectural features: in Camposo, the description focuses on the shape of the house and its granite, while in Laxes the surrounding wall and entrance details are distinctive.
Comparing the Dovecotes
When looking at the dovecotes, it is worth considering their individual forms rather than just their shared building type. The Pombal en Laxes has a cylindrical body and a conical roof made of irregular slate slabs. The Pombal da Casa Grande de Camposo is described as having a circular floor plan and a conical roof. The roof shape is common to both descriptions; the one in Laxes is specifically noted as having a slate roof, while the Pombal da Casa Grande de Camposo is noted for its floor plan. Laxes also offers a point of comparison in terms of size: the Pombal da Casa de Ron in Laxes (Camposo) has a circumference of around 20 m and is the largest dovecote in the municipality of O Corgo.
Route and Mill
Route 3, “Camposo, Cela e Quinte,” passes through the hamlet of Laxes before reaching Santiago de Camposo, and is approximately 9 km long. As route conditions can change, it is advisable to check the latest route and conditions before planning your trip. Near Camposo, the Muíño de Paz mill is located between Camposo and Moscán, on the Neira River. A small footbridge provides access; check the condition of the bridge before your visit.
