Mondego: Heritage and Hiking

For a stay in Mondego, you can plan around two distinct themes: heritage and the Soñeiro–Carnoedo hiking route. At the buildings, architecture and historic use take centre stage; on the route, the distance, course and views are clearly defined. Heritage: style, form and use

Pazo de Trasín is located in Trasín in the parish of Mondego (San Xián) and is classified as civil heritage. It is one of the manor houses known as pazos, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Visits are not possible; its exterior can be viewed. Bear this restriction in mind when planning, and do not expect to visit the interior.

Igrexa de San Xián de Mondego shows influences of the English architectural style. Its main façade features a square, two-storey central tower topped with slender pinnacles. Pinnacles are slender, tapering ornaments that often form the uppermost part of a tower. At the Igrexa, they sit above the square, two-storey central tower. The tower’s design thus combines a clearly defined shape with a delicate finish.

Casa Barrié is a country house built in Mondego in 1887 in the French style. For years, it served Don Pedro Barrié de la Maza and his family as a country retreat and summer residence. Casa Barrié dates from 1887; the pazo belongs to the manor houses of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The description of the Crucero de San Xián de Mondego can be understood from its form: the platform is shaped like a truncated pyramid, with two vertical stone blocks added. The two stone blocks could be interpreted as a “pousadoiro.” The interpretation therefore remains open. A truncated pyramid is a pyramid with its tip cut off.

Getting to Igrexa de San Xián

From Sada, Igrexa de San Xián de Mondego can be reached via the AC-183. After 2.5 km, it is on the right-hand side of the road. As road conditions may change, check the current situation before travelling.

Hiking the Soñeiro–Carnoedo route

The Soñeiro–Carnoedo route is 8.9 km long one way. It is an easy, linear route, designated for travel in both directions and for pedestrians and bicycles.

A highlight of the scenery is described as expansive panoramic views connecting the Mondego valley with the sea.
