The valley landscape of Vedra is shaped by the River Ulla and its tributaries and is part of the Natura 2000 network. When planning a stay, you can discover different facets of the landscape: paths along the Ulla and the Merín, viewpoints and historic structures each offer a different focus.

Choose Hiking Trails by Length and Theme

The Ruta del Pereiro is a five-kilometre linear hiking trail. The approximate walking time for one direction is two hours and 15 minutes; the difficulty level is moderate. The trail starts in the parish of Vedra beside the bridge over the River Pereiro. The information about its length and walking time helps you fit this hike into your day’s plans without mistaking it for a loop.

A longer option is the 12-kilometre San Xoán da Cova hiking trail. It runs along the banks of the Ulla and starts at the Miradoiro de Gundián. For those interested in cycling routes, the Ruta BTT offers another option: its southern section is 35 kilometres long and runs alongside the Ulla. Both sections of the Ruta BTT are of moderate difficulty and are described as rideable year-round. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Mill Landscape Along the Merín

The Área de Interpretación dos Muíños is located beside the Merín stream. The mill complex is considered to be very well preserved and includes eight mills along the river. Visitors can learn how mills work and compare channel mills with bucket mills. This makes the site about more than just the landscape: it also highlights how water was used.

The area includes a roughly two-kilometre path along the Merín, considered suitable for families. Trail conditions may vary seasonally. Along the way, you’ll find a waterfall visible from a small viewpoint, shade-giving trees, as well as meadows, gardens and vineyards. Muiño do Coxo means “Lame Man’s Mill” in English and is considered the only mill with an open millrace in the area.

Bridges, Viewpoints and Structures

At the Miradoiro de Gundián, two quartz pillars, each about 100 metres high, form the cliff face of San Xoán da Cova. The bridges also tell of different connections across the landscape: Gundián Bridge was built in the 1950s and provided the railway connection between Santiago and Madrid. Its arch spans 50 metres. Ponte do Ave stands more than 100 metres high and frames the old Gundián Bridge.

The 55-metre-long Ponte de Ximonde is a cable-stayed bridge with no piers in the river; this design helps protect the natural habitat. In the Couto de Ximonde, fishing platforms and small jetties extend into the river. There is also a 110-metre-long weir, formerly used as a fish weir and associated with the old mill operation.

Sacred buildings include the parish church of Santa Eulalia de Vedra. It stands on a hill above the valley and forms an ensemble with the cross and the fountain in the forecourt. The Santiago Chapel is located in the village of Outeiro, in the parish of San Pedro de Vilanova, and was built in the 18th century.

Trails, Traditions and Seasonal Events

Several pilgrimage routes pass through Vedra, each via different places. The Vía da Prata enters the district via Gundián. The Camiño de Inverno enters near the Virxe de Gundián and continues downhill to Ponte Ulla; before Santiago, the Fonte do Santiaguiño, with sculptures by Mestre Mateo, lies along its route. The Camiño Miñoto Ribeiro crosses the Ponte de Sarandón into Vedra and continues to the Pazo de Ximonde.

Os Xenerais da Ulla is a distinctive Carnival tradition recognised as a festival of tourist interest. Its origins are traced to armed conflicts in the 19th century, including the War of Independence and the Carlist Wars. In Vedra, the tradition takes place in Vilanova on the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday, in Trobe on Carnival Sunday and in San Xián on the following Saturday. Check the latest dates for the specific edition.

Wine also shapes the local range of experiences. Pasabodeghas is a wine route through eight wineries where traditional music is played. Exaltación do Viño da Ulla takes place on the second Sunday in April in San Miguel de Sarandón; there, you can taste Albariño and get to know various wineries in the Ribeira do Ulla. Check that year’s programme before travelling. Canoeing on the Ulla is offered on summer weekends in the Agronovo recreation area; check the times for the current season in advance.
