A trip to Mazaricos can focus on nature, culture or festival dates. The waterfalls are particularly specific: descriptions vary in their stated heights, water flow and directions. There is also a megalithic monument designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural, as well as recurring religious and culinary traditions. If you are looking for a hotel in Mazaricos, this mix can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Waterfalls and access conditions

Fervenza da Noveira is located on the Arcos River in the municipality of Mazaricos. From the A Noveira wastewater treatment plant, it is just a few minutes’ walk; there is an information board for the Ruta das Fervenzas de Mazaricos there. The short walk and the board provide a clear reference point for finding this waterfall.

Fervenza de Gosolfre plunges 15 to 20 metres into a large natural pool. The descent to it is steep and requires particular care. When planning a visit, both the waterfall’s height and the warning about the steep descent are important.

Fervenza de Santa Locaia consists of two waterfalls with a drop of about six metres; there are no signs showing the way to it. At Fervenza de Vioxo-ChacĂn, the drop is more than ten metres in months with higher water flow. Access is considered easy, and the waterfall is suitable for a visit with children. However, the route there is not signposted.

Fervenza de Enxilde, also known as Rego da Ribeiratorta, plunges into the Xallas River in the municipality of Mazaricos, at the Santa Uxía Reservoir. It can be seen from the other side of the reservoir via the road from Ézaro to Dumbría; there are no signs showing the way to it. So, for this waterfall too, the viewing side and access information are important points of reference.

When comparing the stated heights, bear water flow in mind: the figure of more than ten metres for Vioxo-Chacín applies specifically to months with higher water flow. Santa Locaia is described as having a drop of about six metres, while Gosolfre’s is 15 to 20 metres. Access information also varies: for Noveira, the directions mention a few minutes’ walk from the wastewater treatment plant and an information board; for Santa Locaia, Vioxo-Chacín and Enxilde, the access or route is not signposted. For Gosolfre, the key practical detail is the steep descent to the pool.

Megalithic heritage and recurring festival days

Dolmen de A Mina de Perxubeira is a megalithic structure and was part of a necropolis comprising four burial mounds. It is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The dolmen is therefore described both as an individual structure and in the wider context of the necropolis, with its recognised heritage status.

A Romaxe, a pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin at Capela da Virxe do Monte, offers another date to plan around. It takes place on the last Sunday in August. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, its recurring date gives you a specific reference for planning your calendar.

The Festa do Bolo do Pote

The Festa do Bolo do Pote is celebrated annually in A Picota. The festival revived a traditional product that had nearly been lost: a dough made with maize and rye flour, bacon and chorizo. Alongside the natural sites and the dolmen, this local culinary tradition is another reason to visit. If you plan to visit around the festival, its annual schedule is known; check the date of the particular edition before travelling.

This gives you several different ways to plan your trip: waterfalls with their own details about height and directions, a protected megalithic monument, or recurring festivals. These specific differences can help you sort out your travel interests before choosing a hotel in Mazaricos.
