Valverde De La Vera offers several reasons to visit: the region’s traditional architecture, religious traditions and natural attractions. When planning, different considerations matter—for example, the fixed date of Los Empalaos or the seasonal changes in water conditions at La Chorrera.

Architecture and townscape

Valverde De La Vera has preserved the region’s traditional “arquitectura verata.” This includes streets with drainage channels, small arcaded squares, and houses made of stone, clay and wood with balconies. The regional architectural style therefore encompasses the streetscape as well as homes and public squares.

Plaza de Valverde is a specific landmark of this architecture: the square is lined with arcades, and the region’s traditional building style can be seen there. Arcades thus characterize not only small squares but also this named square. Anyone interested in regional architectural styles can see how a public space is designed alongside the town’s houses and streets.

Culture and tradition

A group of streets in Valverde De La Vera is known as “Barrio Judío.” The Museo del Empalao is located in this neighborhood, in a typical house of La Vera. The museum is part of the network of identity museums of the Junta de Extremadura. Its location and building bring together two features of the town: the named group of streets and the region’s traditional architecture.

Los Empalaos is a religious tradition that has been declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional. It takes place on the night of Maundy Thursday. As a vow, the penitents walk barefoot along the Way of the Cross through the streets of Valverde De La Vera, with their arms bound to a plough beam. If you are planning your trip around this tradition, check the arrangements for that year locally.

Church, castle and Picota

The parish church, Iglesia Parroquial de Ntra. Sra. de Fuentes Claras, was built using several elements of the former castle of the Counts of Nieva and retains a distinctly military character. Here, sacred architecture and castle elements come together in a single building.

The later Castillo de Don Nuño has architectural features typical of the late 15th century: a central keep and a square fortified enclosure with towers at the corners. Some of these towers are still visible. The Picota of Valverde is located on the plaza named after it. The privilege of erecting a picota was granted to the municipality in 1309; this date refers to the privilege, not the construction date of the existing monument.

Nature and outdoor activities

Paraje La Chorrera is a natural pool near the Garganta Naval. Water conditions can vary seasonally. Bear this in mind when planning if you would like to include this natural attraction.

Another way to combine nature and outdoor activity is the Ruta del Mirador Marrá de Las Jaras. The route is five kilometers long, linear, and out-and-back. It starts and ends on C/ De la Mimbre, is rated easy, and can be done on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike (BTT). As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The main difference between these natural attractions lies in the type of experience: La Chorrera is described as a natural pool, while the route has a specified length, format and range of ways to travel it. Seasonal water conditions and trail conditions are therefore separate practical considerations for your planning.
