Robledillo de Gata: Historic Lanes, Church and Olive Mill
Accommodation in Robledillo De Gata
Robledillo de Gata is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Conjunto Histórico” category; the designation was made by Decreto 39/1994. The town’s historic layout still defines it today: steep, narrow, winding streets run partly beneath overhanging houses or through passageways that form small tunnels. The lanes, buildings and their construction give a stroll through the town a clear cultural focus.
Lanes and Traditional Architecture
Traditional architecture includes slate, clay and varaseto. This consists of chestnut and oak rods plastered with clay and straw. Overhanging solana balconies with wooden balustrades are also characteristic features. The materials and details offer several ways to explore the traditional building methods more closely, from the plaster used to the projecting wooden balconies.
The Parish Church and Its Architectural Features
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates from the 16th century. It has a rectangular floor plan and a single nave divided into four sections. The church building has a wooden roof with two sloping sides; the sacristy has a Mudéjar roof structure. This makes it possible to distinguish two different roof forms within the building.
Beneath the altar is a movable Baroque recumbent Christ from the school of Gregorio Fernández. Along with the floor plan, nave and roof forms, this work is another feature of the church. The architectural details and the artwork offer contrasting points of interest: the building’s layout and construction on the one hand, and the Baroque figure beneath the altar on the other.
Olive Mill and Local Traditions
The Museo del Aceite “Molino del Medio” is housed in a restored medieval olive mill. The site includes the original machinery and associated equipment. The visit also includes a tasting of oil made from the mill’s own “Manzanilla Cacereña” olives. Check the current visiting arrangements before your trip.
Visitors can discover another local tradition in the small wine cellars. They are located on the lower floors of houses throughout Robledillo de Gata, where visitors can experience traditional wine fermentation. Access to individual cellars may vary. The olive oil museum and wine cellars thus offer two different insights into the town: its olive oil tradition and wine fermentation.
Walking Trails and Bathing Areas
The GR 10 E-02 runs from Robledillo de Gata to Descargamaría, is 3.1 kilometres long and is rated moderate. It starts beside the bridge over the Río Árrago; along the way, the trail passes directly by the Ermita del Humilladero. Its length and difficulty rating provide a concrete reference point for planning this route between the two towns.
The SL-CC 206 is described as an out-and-back route. It starts beside the natural swimming pool in the upper part of Robledillo de Gata, crosses the river after 50 metres and continues through dense mixed woodland to the ruins of the Ermita de Santo Tomé. In contrast to the GR 10 E-02, this route’s highlights are the river crossing, the woodland section and the ruins at its destination. Check current route information before setting out, as ratings and trail conditions can change.
A natural swimming pool is located in the northern part of the municipal area; its seasonal opening may vary. El Machio is also one of Robledillo de Gata’s bathing areas, though seasonal access may vary. Check the conditions before visiting.
