Zarza de Montánchez: Landscape, Church and Tradition
Accommodation in Zarza de Montánchez
If you are looking for a hotel in Zarza de Montánchez, you can plan your stay around the themes that interest you: nature and walking routes, church art or local traditions. Zarza de Montánchez lies at the foot of the Sierra de Montánchez and offers different points of interest, from rural landscapes to historic buildings and long-standing customs.
Dehesa, Sierra and the La Terrona Holm Oak
The landscape around Zarza de Montánchez includes oak groves, olive terraces, vineyards and dehesas with holm oaks and cork oaks. One notable natural landmark is the Singular Tree, Encina La Terrona, on the La Dehesa estate. This monumental holm oak is part of Extremadura’s protection network for outstanding individual trees. Its age is estimated at around 800 years and its height at more than 16 metres. These estimates give an idea of the tree’s scale; they should not be taken as exact measurements.
Route R5, “Ruta Encina La Terrona,” starts in Zarza de Montánchez at Plaza de la Piscina Municipal. Near the edge of town, it crosses the medieval stone Puente Pozo del Prado. To access the private property along the route, an iron gate must be opened and then closed again, as there may be livestock there. Check this access requirement again before setting out, and leave the gate as you found it after passing through.
Church Art and Bridges
The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel combines Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. Its furnishings include 16th-century frescoes and a panel painting of the Virgin and Child, also from the 16th century. The architecture and artworks provide another point of interest alongside the surrounding landscape. Visitors with a particular interest in historic architecture will find specific examples here of different styles and religious art from one century.
Another medieval structure is the Puente del Tamuja, a bridge over the Tamuja River. It is distinct from the Puente Pozo del Prado, which is part of Route R5. The town’s description therefore features two bridges with different contexts: the stone bridge near the edge of town, associated with the route, and the Puente del Tamuja over the river of the same name.
Games and Festival Traditions
“Juego de Las Bolas” is a traditional game in Zarza de Montánchez. It is played on a sloping rectangular concrete surface with high edging and eight small steel balls. Chance and betting play a central role, setting it apart from an activity based solely on skill. If you are interested in taking part, check the arrangements locally.
The Fiesta del Pan y el Queso includes the Tabúa tradition: crushed seeds from the Espadaña cattail are thrown at one another in the streets of Zarza de Montánchez. The festival custom also includes distributing bread and cheese after a commemorative prayer at the church. The origins of the fiesta are associated with a battle between Muslims and Christians on the Iberian Peninsula around 1234. If you are travelling for these customs, check the current festival programme and planned arrangements in advance.
Fishing and Paragliding
Fishing is possible at the Tamuja Reservoir; local access conditions may change and should be checked before your visit. Paragliding takes place from the Sierra de San Cristóbal. For this activity, take account of the weather and the provider’s conditions, which may also change. Fishing at the reservoir and paragliding from the Sierra are different outdoor activities. Which of them matters to your travel plans depends on the activity that interests you.
