Collado combines a hilly landscape with walking trails, a designated bathing area and a lively religious tradition. This gives you several focal points when choosing your destination: you can explore the landscape, learn about the historic character of the town or take festival dates into account when planning your trip.

A landscape of hills and irrigated plains

The terrain of Collado de la Vera is predominantly hilly. Granite and schist hills, along with small gorges, shape the landscape. To the south, the terrain becomes flatter and gives way to productive irrigated vegas. These contrasting landscapes create a mix of rugged terrain and flatter, irrigated land across the municipality.

The vegetation is also varied: the surrounding area includes chestnut, oak and cork oak forests, as well as scrubland with heather, strawberry trees and rockroses. The Garganta Pedro Chate is designated a “Paraje Pintoresco” (scenic area). Together with the hills and gorges, it is one of Collado’s distinctive natural features.

Walking trail and activities by the water

The Ruta de las Dos Juntas is a six-kilometre circular route with a low difficulty level. It starts and ends at Plaza El Llano. Along the way, the route follows the Arroyo de las Posadillas and approaches the Garganta Pedro Chate. The trail combines a manageable distance with several named landscape features; its length and difficulty rating can help you decide how to fit this walk into your stay.

Garganta Las Pilas is a natural bathing area on the Garganta Pedro Chate in the municipality of Collado de la Vera. Its clear, cold water is suitable for swimming, although access may vary by season. If swimming is important to your plans, check the conditions before your visit. Fishing is also a popular activity in Collado de la Vera, so water and landscape feature in more than just the walking experience.

Action Vera has a multi-adventure centre in Collado de la Vera. If you are considering including this in your plans, ask the provider about the specific activities and current information.

Church, square and religious tradition

The Iglesia Parroquial San Cristóbal dates from the 15th century. It was built using masonry, rough-hewn stonework and brick. Beside the parish church, Plaza de Collado de la Vera is also home to a Fuente-pilón (fountain-trough). The square is considered a typical, welcoming meeting place for locals and visitors. A walk through the streets offers an opportunity to discover Collado’s culture, traditions and popular festivals.

One distinctive religious tradition is the Santo Jubileo. Collado has held this privilege since the 16th century; the Santo Jubileo grants a plenary indulgence and takes place on the Wednesday of Holy Week. The Fiestas Patronales de San CristĂłbal are celebrated on the first weekend in August. The Fiestas de Nuestra Sra. del Rosario take place on the first weekend in October and include both a religious and a social programme. The programme may vary from year to year.

Regional cuisine

Collado’s cuisine includes tomato soup and migas extremeñas, as well as goat meat roasted or served as a stew. Regional menus also feature asparagus, seasonal mushrooms and cured meats. Depending on the season, cherries, figs and chestnuts are among the fruits available. These seasonal ingredients offer another glimpse of the town’s culinary scene.

Collado is also part of the production area for paprika, ham and extra virgin olive oil, each of which has its own designation of origin. Together with the local dishes, these products give the area a distinctive culinary character that complements the trip’s landscape and cultural highlights.
