Acehuche: Cheese, Festivals and Trails
Accommodation in Acehuche
Acehuche offers tangible reasons to visit: Queso de Acehúche, the Las Carantoñas festival tradition, and trails in the town and through the dehesa. If you are looking for a hotel in Acehuche, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip: the cheese tradition and festival, the town’s architecture, or the landscape and nature watching. These differences are also useful when choosing when to travel, since the Feria is tied to Palm Sunday weekend, while the Alborá takes place on January 20.
Queso de AcehĂşche and how it is made
Queso de Acehúche is made exclusively from raw goat’s milk and animal rennet. Its production area includes Acehuche and other municipalities in the Tajo-Salor-Almonte and Valle del Alagón areas. Its regional association therefore extends beyond the town itself. Visitors can buy the cheese in local shops or at livestock farms elsewhere in the region. At the Centro de Interpretación del Queso de Cabra y las Carantoñas de Acehúche, an interactive exhibition connects the production of raw-milk goat cheese with the Las Carantoñas festival tradition. The center is accessible to people with reduced mobility; admission is free. Check the practical arrangements before your visit.
Festivals on different dates
The Feria Ibérica del Queso de Cabra is held annually in Acehuche and has been celebrated on Palm Sunday weekend since 2004. As the exact date depends on Palm Sunday, check the calendar date for the year you plan to travel. Las Carantoñas offer another way to experience local festivities: men dress in animal skins and leather masks and carry dry branches from Acehuche or wild olive trees. The Alborá on January 20 includes a tamborilero, who wakes the participants in Las Carantoñas. Afterwards, the Mayordomos prepare a breakfast of migas and coffee.
Trails in town and through the dehesa
For a short walk in town, the Ruta Interurbana de Acehuche is a straightforward option. It is listed as an easy walking route, 2.10 kilometers long, taking about 30 minutes. Its listed stops include the Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista, a 17th-century Baroque church on the Plaza de la Iglesia. By contrast, the Ruta Laguna Nueva, Ermita y Tumbas antropomorfas can be explored on foot, by bike, or on horseback. It passes through the Extremaduran dehesa and offers views of Laguna Nueva. On the Ruta Sierra Ladronera (Acehuche-Pescueza), you can observe birds in the dehesa and in the riverside vegetation near the Rivera de Fresnedosa.
Hermitages and visiting conditions
There are three hermitages in Acehuche. The Ermita del Cristo de la Cañada and the Ermita de Santa MarĂa are within or near the town center and no more than a five-minute walk from each other. The Ermita del Cristo de la Cañada is a simple 17th-century Baroque chapel; practical access may vary. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Fátima is five kilometers from the town center and is normally not open to the public except during the traditional pilgrimage.
