Jerte – Nature Trails and Architectural History
Accommodation in Jerte
If you are considering Jerte as a destination, you can shape your plans around different interests: hiking trails and nature, swimming in summer, or architecture and local history. When looking for a hotel in Jerte, it helps to first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.
Nature and trails
Los Pilones are large pools carved into the rock by river erosion. They lie within the Garganta de Los Infiernos Nature Reserve. Their shape reflects the force of the water, which has carved out the rock pools over a long period of time. If you would also like to learn about the landscape through its natural features, the reserve’s Interpretation Centre provides information about the ecosystems, biodiversity and nature trails of the protected area, as well as the landscape of Los Pilones. Backlit panels, hand-painted murals, models and a large diorama present these subjects.
The Interpretation Centre is located on the N-110 at kilometre 368, in the Los Arenales area, right at the entrance to the Nature Reserve. This location can help you find your way; check local access information before setting out. Another option is a linear route whose stated starting point is in Jerte: it begins beside the tourist office and leads to the Los PapĂşos Bridge. The return follows the same route. As route information can change, check the details locally before setting out.
The PR-CC 02 Ruta Cerezo en flor runs near Jerte and close to the salmonid breeding centre. Here, too, it is advisable to check the latest route information. The Centro de SalmĂłnidos del Jerte has an ecological purpose: wild trout and other native fish are bred there to restock waterways, reservoirs, riverbanks and gorges in Extremadura. This is a different way of experiencing nature from observing landforms or finding your way along a hiking trail.
Architecture and history
Different architectural details come together at the Ermita del Cristo del Amparo: the building is made of masonry reinforced with granite, and the vaulted chapel contains Baroque stucco work. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates from before the 15th century and was renovated in 1756. Its main altarpiece and side altarpieces are Baroque. The church’s date and its furnishings thus describe different aspects of its historical appearance.
The streets and houses also offer insights into the town’s architecture. Some of the heraldic houses on Calle Coronel GolfĂn belonged to influential families in the town’s socioeconomic life. Calleja de los Bueyes features typical architecture, with houses that have wooden balconies and wooden solanas, as well as half-timbered and adobe elements. These examples draw attention not only to individual façades, but also to the different materials and building styles.
The town’s history is tied to a specific date: during the Peninsular War, Jerte was burned down by the French on 21 August 1809. The residents who had fled later returned and rebuilt the town in its former architectural style. Plaza de la Independencia commemorates the residents who stood up to Napoleon’s troops; the troops burned down and looted the town. The square and the rebuilding offer different ways to explore this historical turning point.
Seasonal activities and access conditions
At Parque El NogalĂłn, the natural swimming pool can be used for swimming in summer. As swimming conditions can change, check them before your visit. The Barranco Garganta de los PapĂşos features abseiling sections, jumps and slides. Access is via private land and requires prior notification to Jerte Natura. Confirm access arrangements in advance; this condition is part of planning and should not be confused with the general hiking trails.
Cherry blossom is also part of the regional picture: cherry trees bloom in the Jerte Valley in spring and attract many visitors. The timing of the blossom varies from year to year. Jerte cherries also have their own protected designation of origin. These regional features add to the choice of nature and history themes, but they do not provide a fixed date for the blossom.
