Accommodation in Garriguella
Garriguella brings together religious and architectural history, wine experiences, nature and an annual food festival. If you are looking for hotels in Garriguella, these different highlights may help shape your choice of destination. When planning your trip, it can be useful to consider whether wine and local cuisine, architectural history or nature education are your main interests.
Architectural history and historic traces
Garriguella’s architectural history spans several periods. The Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Camp is a hermitage dedicated to religious worship, dating from the 17th century and located in the Mare de Déu del Camp area. The Església de Santa Eulà lia de Noves brings together more recent and older construction phases: the church was built between 1722 and 1785 under the direction of master builder Pere Santariol, and the bell tower followed in 1883. The remains of an earlier Romanesque temple, popularly dated to the first decades of the 11th century, are located in the eastern part of the church.
The Molà de Vent is another of the town’s historic buildings. The surviving windmill dates from the 16th or 17th century and has a well-preserved cylindrical tower. It is one of the few surviving buildings of its kind in the Empordà . Today, only a partly reconstructed side arch remains of the former Capella de St. Sebastià , which dates from the 16th century.
The airfield 314 is another historic trace: it opened towards the end of 1937 in the southern part of the municipality of Garriguella. The Pedra dels búnquers installation draws on Garriguella’s topography, recreating it with a concrete element. It also illustrates the strategy that led to the construction of 380 bunkers.
Views across the plain
The Mirador de la Costa de la Torre is a viewpoint overlooking the plain of Garriguella. This landscape perspective complements the historic buildings with another point of reference for exploring the town.
Wine, walking and local cuisine
AgrĂcola de Garriguella i RabĂłs SCCL offers wine tourism and tours of its winemaking facilities, cellars and vineyards. Its offerings also include tastings and meals featuring local products, accompanied by olive oil and wines from the EmpordĂ designation of origin. Check in advance which tours, tastings and dining options are available during your travel dates.
Mas Llunes offers a different focus: “Vi-o-Diversitat” is a walking route through organic vineyards in the natural area of the Serra de l’Albera. It is linked to the winery’s project to restore biodiversity and raise awareness of environmental issues. While AgrĂcola focuses on winemaking facilities, cellars, vineyards and local products, this route combines walking with the winery’s biodiversity project. The route can be booked, but availability may change. Check availability before making your plans.
Nature education and festival culture
The Centro de Reproducción de Tortugas de la Albera is dedicated to breeding Mediterranean tortoises in captivity. The Albera is home to the last population of this species on the Iberian Peninsula. A video and information about the Mediterranean tortoise’s biology, habitat and conservation explore its connection to the Albera. This topic therefore focuses on both the species and its habitat and conservation.
Held annually in Garriguella, the Fira de la Garnatxa i el Brunyol de l’Empordà showcases Garnatxa and the traditional Brunyol de l’Empordà . The programme includes wine-tasting competitions, cooking workshops and markets featuring local craftspeople. Activities may vary from one edition to another, so check the dates and programme for the year of your trip before visiting.
