Torroella De Fluvià: Discover Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Torroella De Fluvià
Torroella De Fluvià combines striking buildings with a riverside forest and a lagoon landscape. When planning your trip, you can choose from different focuses: churches and medieval traces sit alongside a linear route that leads to opportunities for enjoying nature and birdwatching. The specific architectural forms and landscape details give each of these themes its own character.
Romanesque heritage and Sant Tomàs de Fluvià
Sant Tomàs de Fluvià is a small monastery with the status of a Benedictine priory. The Romanesque church dates from the 11th century; legally, Sant Tomàs is classified as a Cultural Asset of National Interest in the Historic Monument category. The history of the site goes back further: the church was probably built over the remains of a chapel from the 7th or 8th century. A Roman villa previously stood here.
The complex was conserved and restored with the participation of the Generalitat authority responsible for cultural heritage, and was subsequently returned to Sant Tomàs. If you would like to visit the interior, arrange your visit through the Torroella de Fluvià town hall. Office hours are Monday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; confirm the visit before you arrive.
Churches, fortifications and distinctive architectural features
The church of Sant Cebrià de Torroella de Fluvià is in the La Vila district, on the eastern edge of the town. It is a single-nave Romanesque church with a semicircular apse. The portal is notable for its three receding round arches. The church can therefore be described both by its floor plan and by a specific detail of its entrance.
At the southern edge of the town stands the tower of Ca l’Albanyà, a square fortified remnant of a building. Another architectural feature is Can Sopa: there, a shallow-arched bridge crosses the street and connects the two parts of the house. La Força de Torroella de Fluvià is a former medieval walled enclosure in Alt Empordà. In Vilacolum, the present-day church of Sant Esteve is an 18th-century single-nave building with side chapels and a polygonal apse.
Riverside forest, lagoon and nature watching
The Torroella de Fluvià–Gola del Fluvià route is a linear trail about ten kilometres long. You can use it year-round on foot or by bicycle. The starting point is at the southern entrance to the town, at a roundabout where the disused C-31 branches off. Check the condition of the access road before setting out. In its first section, the route follows a well-preserved riverside forest. Among other species, you may spot woodpeckers, golden orioles and nightingales; the calls of kingfishers can also be heard. Such encounters depend on the season and are not guaranteed.
The Bosque de Ribera Illa Albanyà is a riverside forest of about 35,000 square metres near the Fluvià River. Older structures there include a washhouse and a well, as well as several other small structures. Ponds in the surrounding area were formed by former gravel extraction. Paths are used to interpret and enhance the natural and cultural heritage. This landscape therefore brings together natural features and traces of earlier use.
The route also includes a 34-hectare lagoon, restored in 2014. A footbridge leads to a central island; there is also a circular path and a raised observation platform. In parts of the area, visible signs of neglect can be seen. The lagoon area is part of the Natura network and offers seasonal opportunities to observe mallards, grey herons and little egrets. The lagoon and riverside forest thus offer a different focus from the buildings: here, the emphasis is on the landscape, its former use and seasonal birdwatching.
When choosing a hotel in Torroella De Fluvià, you can first consider which side of the destination you want to shape your stay: Romanesque churches and historic architectural features, or an excursion along the linear route with its riverside forest and lagoon. The route’s length of about ten kilometres is a practical reference for planning your outing; the cultural sites, meanwhile, each offer their own architectural details. Then compare hotel offers according to your personal requirements and travel plans.
