Discover Puertito de Güímar
Accommodation in Puertito de Güímar
Puertito de Güímar combines a centrally located beach with the adjacent Malpaís de Güímar Nature Reserve. If you are looking for a hotel in Puertito de Güímar, local highlights can help you choose: are you most interested in visiting the beach, exploring the coastal scenery, or hiking in the reserve? At the beach, the ground and surf shape your visit; in Malpaís, the focus is on habitats, landforms, and hiking routes.
Beach in the center
Playa del Puertito de Güímar is in the center of town; its shore is made up of pebbles and black sand. The surf is very calm, although sea conditions can change daily. The beach is considered suitable for families with children. When planning your day, take into account both the firm ground and the changing sea conditions. The beach has adapted access for people with reduced mobility. Before your trip, check access and facility information if these are important to your plans.
Nature and scenery at Malpaís
The Reserva Natural Especial del Malpaís de Güímar borders El Puertito de Güímar and covers 290.3 hectares, or around three square kilometers. The area preserves coastal and inland habitats of the Cardonal-Tabaibal, as well as the associated wildlife and plant life. Its conservation objectives also include the landscape and geomorphological structure of Malpaís and the adjacent volcanic cones. The area contains one of the best examples of Cardonal-Tabaibal in the Canary archipelago. The protected habitats therefore extend from the coast inland; the shape of the landscape is also one of the area's defining natural features.
Hiking trails and route choices
Sendero 1 through the nature reserve is a 6.11-kilometer loop of moderate difficulty. It starts and ends on Calle Almirante Cervera in El Puertito de Güímar. When planning your hikes, you can consider the distance and difficulty level separately. Malpaís de Güímar 2 goes around Montaña Grande and can be used to extend Route 1. The difference is clear when choosing a route: Route 1 is a loop with a stated distance, while Route 2 offers the option of extending it. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Salt pans and local history
Visitors can still see two well-preserved salt pans in the adjacent Malpaís de Güímar. Check their condition on site. The history of Puertito de Güímar also includes the Ermita de Santiago Apóstol and the parish of Santiago Apóstol. The chapel was blessed in 1953, and the parish was founded in 1966. These dates mark different events: the blessing of the chapel and the founding of the parish. This makes it easy to distinguish the two milestones chronologically.
