In the town, the Cristo de las Aguas Church and its religious and cultural festive tradition connect visitors with the local community; PR-LZ-04 runs between Teguise and Guatiza. The Jardín de Cactus and the Cantera de Tinamala add botanical and geological perspectives to your plans. If you’re looking for a hotel in Guatiza, these different points of interest can help you shape your travel plans around culture, landscape or a hiking route.

Church and Festive Tradition

At the heart of Guatiza stands the distinctive Iglesia del Cristo de las Aguas. The Cristo de las Aguas Church houses a painting of Saint Margaret dating from the 18th century. Construction of the Santo Cristo de las Aguas Church in Guatiza began in 1832. For travellers interested in sacred art and architectural history, this offers several historical points of interest.

The traditional festivities in honour of the Santo Cristo de las Aguas are considered a religious and cultural event for the local community. The programme announced for 2025 included solemn processions, liturgical ceremonies, cultural activities, concerts, open-air dances and family-friendly events; the 2025 celebration was open to everyone. The Cristo de las Aguas pilgrimage also honours a crucifix which, according to tradition, appeared in the sea off Los Cocoteros in the mid-19th century. The programme and public nature described here refer to the 2025 celebration; if you plan to visit later, check the festival dates in effect at that time.

Garden and Geology

The JardĂn de Cactus was created from a former quarry for volcanic material; its terraces preserve the shape of the former excavation. The garden is also home to nearly 500 cactus species from around the world. Two distinct aspects therefore sit side by side: the visible shape of the former quarry and a botanical collection of plants from different parts of the world.

The Cantera de Tinamala offers a geological point of interest. Its outcrops reveal the internal structure of a tuff cone made up of partially welded pyroclastic deposits from ballistic ejecta. The extraction of blocks created a particularly distinctive terraced cut. The two terraced landscapes therefore have different origins: at the JardĂn de Cactus, the terraces preserve the shape of the former quarry; at the Cantera de Tinamala, the cut was created by block extraction.

Hiking Route between Teguise and Guatiza

PR-LZ-04 runs between Teguise and Guatiza and is one of Lanzarote’s ten signposted short hiking routes. The route is considered a way to explore the eastern part of the municipality of Teguise and highlights its agricultural heritage. It offers a different perspective from the place-specific themes of the church and festive tradition, or the garden’s and quarry’s botanical and geological features: PR-LZ-04 focuses on the hiking route and agricultural heritage.
