Tahiche: Culture and Volcanic Landscape
Accommodation in Tahiche
Anyone planning a stay in Tahiche can get to know the place through César Manrique’s cultural heritage and a landscape shaped by volcanic formations. A longer walking route and a festival in late July also offer specific starting points for planning. If you’re looking for hotels in Tahiche, this guide can help you decide whether culture, landscape, or a particular travel period will shape your stay.
Cultural Sites and César Manrique
The Fundación César Manrique is now based in the artist’s former home in Taro de Tahíche. César Manrique lived in this house from 1968 to 1988. Thus, the foundation’s current role and a clearly defined period in the artist’s life come together in one place. Taro de Tahiche has significant historical, architectural, and artistic value and is a unique testament to Lanzarote’s culture.
The design of the house also connects it with its volcanic surroundings. The lower level is built around five natural volcanic bubbles, connected by tunnels excavated in the lava.
Los Aljibes de Tahiche is one of César Manrique’s earliest works. Today, the site is used as a cultural venue for various exhibitions. It also has a restaurant specializing in grilled meat. The exhibition program may change; before visiting, also check whether the restaurant will be open on your chosen date.
Volcanic Landscape and Walking Route
The crater of the volcano of the same name is located in Tahíche. At the foot of this mountain, different layers of earth are visible, revealing geomorphological forms and textures. Lava flows from the eruptions of 1730 and 1736 run near Tahíche.
One specific hiking option is the Los Valles–Tahíche route, which ends in Tahíche. The walking trail is 14.3 kilometers long, is classified as low difficulty, and takes about five hours. Allow about five hours; the low difficulty rating is a separate classification. The route passes through El Volcán and Montaña Ubique; sights along the way also include the Ermita de Santiago y Santa Ana. Check local conditions before hiking.
Romería in Late July
The time of year can also be important when planning your trip. At the end of July, a large Romería takes place in Tahíche in honor of Santiago Apóstol and Santa Ana. It includes offerings, a procession, and a mass. Exact event dates and the program may vary, so check the information for your preferred travel period before your trip.
