Plentzia brings together historic architecture, maritime history and experiences on the water.

An official Metro Bilbao station list dated September 19, 2024, lists Plentzia as a station on Line 1. For specific journeys, it is advisable to check the current timetable.

Old Town and Bridges

In Plentzia’s Old Town, former sailors’ houses sit alongside palaces and a church. Santiago Arch is the only surviving remnant of the former city wall. This brings different historical elements together: the architectural styles of the Old Town and a surviving part of the former fortifications.

Two bridges also make their own architectural statements. Puente Nuevo is a white cable-stayed pedestrian bridge about 150 meters long, built in 1991. Pasarela is formed by two inclined metal arches that meet at the top, while steel cables support the walkway. Puente Nuevo can be identified by its length, color and year of construction; at Pasarela, the interplay of arches and cables takes center stage.

Museums and Maritime History

Farmacia-Museo Aramburu occupies the original pharmacy, laboratory and old dispensary rooms. Its exhibition traces the development of medicine over the last century. The focus is therefore not only on medical topics, but also on the rooms in which the exhibition is housed.

Museo Plasentia de Butrón explores Plentzia’s maritime and nautical history. On display are documents from the Cofradía de Mareantes de Plentzia dating from 1524 to 1870, as well as documents from the Escuela de Náutica de Plentzia, which operated until 1933. Temporary exhibitions, cultural activities throughout the year and guided tours round out the museum’s program. If a guided tour or a particular temporary exhibition is important to your plans, check the latest dates.

Estuary, Bay and Experiences on the Water

The Ría de Plentzia is the mouth of the Butrón River. The river flows through the municipality of Plentzia and eventually empties into the Cantabrian Sea. Plentzia Beach is located in a bay of the same name. At the mouth of the estuary, there is a small wave suitable for beginners learning to surf or canoe. These details refer to different waterside settings: the beach in the bay and the wave at the river mouth.

Bodega Crusoe Treasure offers another experience on the water. The underwater winery is located in an artificial reef, 20 meters deep in Plentzia Bay. The visit takes place entirely outdoors and includes an explanation of the project on land, a transfer, a tasting of two underwater wines aboard the Crusoe Treasure vessel, and a 40-minute boat trip around the bay. These elements combine an introduction on land with a tasting and a trip on the water.

Coastal Views and Hiking Trails

The Route of the Cliffs connects Getxo and Plentzia and offers panoramic views of the Bizkaia coast. Several hiking trails start and end in Plentzia. For planning your route, these details offer different options: a named route between two places with coastal views, or trails whose starting and ending points are in Plentzia.

Plentzia offers several themes to consider when planning your trip: historic buildings and exhibitions, maritime history, activities on the estuary and in the bay, and coastal walks and hiking trails. The focus that matters most to you can help guide your choice of where to stay and your search for a suitable hotel in Plentzia.
