Lanestosa lies in the valley of the River Calera, with steep slopes shaping the area. For planning your trip, you can focus on two main aspects: the historically distinctive town center and nearby hiking routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Lanestosa, you can plan your trip around whether you are primarily interested in architecture or trails through the landscape.

The Historic Townscape

Lanestosa’s center retains a medieval character, visible in many of its old features. The townscape includes houses with continuous balconies, narrow streets, and a square with a portico. There are also palaces dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. These features reveal different aspects of the town center: the design of the houses, the narrow streets, the square, and the distinguished buildings. Lanestosa’s architecture is therefore not limited to a single building, but encompasses several clearly identified features.

One example is the Colina Palace, a Baroque building. The parish church of San Pedro provides a different architectural accent: it is a Renaissance church dating from the 16th century. The Baroque palace and the Renaissance parish church thus highlight two distinct styles. Those interested in architectural history can consider these buildings as separate topics when exploring the town, without conflating their different features into a single architectural style.

The Old Bridge is also part of Lanestosa’s history. It once connected Laredo with Burgos.

Hiking Around Lanestosa

Stage 18 of the GR® 123 long-distance trail, “Vuelta a Bizkaia,” runs between Balneario El Molinar and Lanestosa. It was homologated again in January 2026. For planning a specific section, the final stretch is particularly straightforward: it leads from Cueva del Agua to Lanestosa, is 3.4 kilometers long, and takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. This distance and time apply to the final stretch, not the entire 18th stage.

Hiking routes around Lanestosa also include a variety of destinations: an ascent of Monte Zalama, trails to Balgerri and its beech forest, and routes to Ventana de Relux. These destinations offer different kinds of outings—from a climb and a woodland area to a named hiking destination. When planning, you can choose according to which destination interests you most. Check local conditions for the routes.

Group Tours

Guided tours of Lanestosa are available for groups. If you would like to include one in your travel plans, please check availability in advance. Alongside the historic townscape and hiking opportunities, these offer different ways to plan a stay: you can focus on the architecture, arrange a group tour, or explore nearby hiking destinations.
