If you’re looking for a hotel in Ibarrangelu, your interests can shape your choice of destination: the beach and water sports, a hiking route or architecture. Laida and Laga differ in their beach features and activities; PR-BI 165 leads from Ibarrangelu towards the Ogoño viewpoint. Churches, chapels and Ibaeta fronton square add specific architectural landmarks to the mix. These themes offer different starting points for planning and can be prioritised according to what you want to focus on during your trip.

Beaches and water sports

Laida Beach is almost one kilometre long, has fine golden sand and is the largest beach in the Mundaka estuary. Windsurfing, canoeing and sailing are possible there. Laga has a different focus: there is a surf club and surf school at the beach. Seasonal offerings may vary; operators at Laga may also change. If you’re planning to take advantage of a specific offering, check the latest information before your trip.

Hiking routes and viewpoints

The PR-BI 165 route, titled “Ruta hacia el mar”, starts in Ibarrangelu and leads between farmhouses to the Elantxobe cemetery in Bermokiz. After the turnoff in Bermokiz, it climbs uphill through the forest to the Ogoño viewpoint. The route is listed as 6.5 kilometres, 165 metres and two hours in duration. The viewpoint and summit of Ogoño on PR-BI 165 are exposed to steep slopes and strong winds. Bear these conditions in mind when including the route in your day’s plans.

A footpath connects Ibarrangelu with Laga Beach. Antzora is a nudist cove near Laida; a downhill footpath of about 500 metres leads to it from the Antzora neighbourhood. When planning your route, it’s useful to distinguish between this access path and PR-BI 165: the Antzora path is around 500 metres long, while PR-BI 165 is 6.5 kilometres.

The San Pedro de Atxarre hermitage stands on the 312-metre-high summit of Mount Atxarre. The San Pedro de Atxarre viewpoint offers a 360-degree panoramic view across the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. The key to choosing between the viewpoints is what each one overlooks: San Pedro de Atxarre offers panoramic views across Urdaibai, while Ogoño is the destination of the forest climb on PR-BI 165.

Architecture and festival date

According to the description, the Church of San Andrés has a gilded Baroque altarpiece and a polychrome wooden ceiling in the Plateresque style, one of the few surviving examples on the Iberian Peninsula. The Church of Santa Maria Engracia in Akorda was built in 1520. The Sacred Heart of Jesus chapel is next to Laida Beach. At the entrance to Ibarrangelu, Ibaeta fronton square is notable for its construction and ornamental pediment.

The annual festival calendar includes the festival in Akorda in honour of Santa Marina on 18 July. If you’d like to plan your stay around this date, check the festival dates before your trip.
