Araia between Nature Trails and Industrial History
Accommodation in Araia
Araia combines nature trails with a rich local history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Araia, you can plan your stay around whether landscapes, industrial history, or historic buildings are your main interest. The trails and sights described here offer different ways to explore them.
Nature trails with different highlights
The walking trail to the source of the Zirauntza River runs through the river floodplain and lush countryside dotted with beech and oak trees, pools, and waterfalls. Both the water and the varied landscape shape the route. If nature is your main interest when planning your trip, this trail offers a clear focus.
The SL A13 circular route offers a different experience: it leads to Castillo de Marutegi, also known as Morutegi, and climbs to the summit of San Miguel. From there, you can enjoy views of the Llanada Alavesa. The SL A14 circular route starts in Araia’s Intuxi district, by the San Pedro hydroelectric plant. The routes can therefore be distinguished by their stated highlights: the Zirauntza floodplain and waterfalls, the castle and summit on the SL A13, and the starting point in Intuxi on the SL A14.
Industrial history and architecture
The Ajuria factory operated from 1848 until it closed in 1985. It housed the first electric induction furnace in the entire country and one of the first blast furnaces in the Basque Country. Its years of operation give the industrial history a different time frame from that of individual buildings; the two furnace details add a dimension of technological significance.
The buildings also reflect different periods and types of architecture. The present-day Iglesia de San Pedro was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. The Ermita de Andra Mari is an 18th-century Baroque chapel, while the Palacio de los Ajuria in Araia is a 19th-century historicist palace. The Frontón de Iturbero was built in 1876 and is considered one of the oldest in the province of Álava. Together, these examples show an architectural history that is not limited to a single period or building type.
Carved crosses of Saint James at the Ermita de Andra Mari are a reminder that, with near certainty, the chapel was a stopping point on the Camino de Santiago route that passes through the San Adrián Tunnel into Álava. This adds a connection to the pilgrimage route to its classification as a Baroque chapel, and the tradition’s high degree of certainty is explicitly stated.
Nature, technology, and local themes
The Museo del Mitxarro brings together themes and cultural heritage from the municipality of Asparrena. These include energy, the ecology of a beech forest, karst landscapes, and archaeological remains, as well as architecture, transport routes, and the Araia foundry. Cheesemaking, along with the customs and lifestyles of the local population, is also covered. Nature, technological development, and everyday life are presented side by side.
The Aspárrena Nature Interpretation Centre and the Renewable Energy Centre are located within the San Pedro de Araia hydroelectric plant. In connection with the cheese theme, AIXTRA S.C. is associated with cheese bearing the D.O. Idiazabal protected designation of origin; its location is Caserío Aixtra, 01250 Araia, Álava.
