Maestu offers several clear starting points for a trip shaped by architectural history, local traditions and time by the river. A palace dating from the 17th or 18th century, a fountain from 1865, historic bridges and a parish church showcase different architectural themes. The Parque Local de Zumalde lies on the wooded banks of the Ega; in Gesal, the remains of an ironworks and a grain mill are among the historic sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Maestu, you can plan your trip around these highlights—architecture, transport history, industrial history or local customs, for example.

Palace, Fountain and Bridges

The Palacio de los Samaniego is a building dating from the 17th or 18th century. It is built of ashlar masonry and features iron balconies, a carved eaves cornice and a large coat of arms. Solid expanses of stone stand alongside finer craftsmanship and the coat of arms as a striking feature of the façade. The date falls within the stated period; no more precise year is given.

The Fuente de los Ocho Caños was built in 1865. Its octagonal surround of dressed stone is enclosed by a railing with gates. Two construction dates are recorded for the bridges: the Puente de San Juan dates from 1772 and the Puente del Molino from 1802. There are 30 years between these dates. The Puente Ferrería is also one of Maestu’s bridges. The comparison highlights different periods in the town’s historic bridge collection, while the fountain’s octagonal shape adds its own architectural accent.

Church Architecture and Distinctive Details

The parish church of the Invention of the Holy Cross was originally a rectangular building dating from the late 15th or 16th century. At the end of the 18th century, the addition of two chapels transformed it into a church with a Latin-cross plan. Its construction history therefore traces the change from the original rectangular building to a different floor plan. The church complex also includes the mechanical figure known as “Papamoscas”: it waves its hand when the clock strikes the hour. The church thus tells a story of architectural development, while the figure adds a moving detail.

Riverside and Former Transport Use

The Parque Local de Zumalde lies on the wooded banks of the Ega River. Its facilities include barbecue areas and tables, a children’s playground, a swimming pool, changing rooms and hot showers, as well as facilities for football, basketball and tennis. There are places to sit and barbecue, play, swim and take part in various ball sports. The swimming pool may operate seasonally; if you plan to use it during your trip, check its current operating status before visiting.

The former station on the Vía del Ferrocarril Vasco-Navarro railway has been restored and now houses the Arraia-Maeztu town hall. The building’s former use as a railway station has given way to its current municipal function. For travellers interested in transport history, this change is a distinct part of the town’s history.

Industrial History and Local Tradition

In Gesal, on the slopes of Monte Arburu, are the remains of a former ironworks, including its dam and arches. The historic remains in Gesal also include a grain mill dating from 1561. The year provides a specific date for the mill; the dam and arches are the named surviving parts of the ironworks. These are two distinct traces of earlier production.

According to local tradition, a pilgrimage to the cross takes place on the first Saturday in May. Unmarried women embroider a cloth with symbols of the Passion, and the oldest person in the village then hangs it on the cross. The timing, the design of the cloth and the role of the oldest person are all part of this distinctive custom. If you would like to include the pilgrimage in your travel plans, check the current event dates in advance.
